Background to the Assignment IMC has provided and continues to provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable and affected communities across Somalia through implementation of primary and secondary healthcare, nutrition, protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities. IMC interventions target the most affected regions of Somalia, especially states within south central Somalia. Over the years, IMC has established operational presence in many regions of Somalia and currently operates in Banadir, Middle Shebelle, Mudug, Galgaduud and Bay regions. Through the long-term presence on the ground, International Medical Corps has built strong relationships with communities throughout Somalia, making it possible to operate in many diverse geographical areas. In addition to providing immediate relief, International Medical Corps builds a framework for program sustainability and long-term positive change, making Somali communities more self-reliant. International Medical Corps has been implementing Health and Nutrition interventions in Jowhar and Baidoa Districts in Middle Shebelle and Bay Regions of Somalia Respectively. In Jowhar District, IMC has operationalized three (3) health centres, six (6) primary health units (PHUs) offering integrated nutrition and WASH interventions, and two mobile units offering integrated health, nutrition, and WASH services in hard to reach areas. To ensure complementarity of interventions, IMC through ECHO funding, operationalized one stand-alone maternity unit in Jowhar, providing and CeMONC services. In Baidoa Bay region, IMC runs one health centre at Bardale and two mobile teams covering 5 IDP camps within the town with OFDA funding. They offer free high quality Health, Nutrition, WASH and protection services to the most vulnerable populations.
Purpose of the assignment Rationale for the IYCF KABP Assessment International Medical Corps has been implementing MIYCN and other High impact Nutrition interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality among under-five in Jowhar and Baidoa as an ultimate outcome. To achieve this outcome, IMC intends to monitor immediate and intermediate outcomes to inform the progress of the current project and inform design of future projects in this districts. Therefore, the KABP assessment is aimed at providing real time qualitative and quantitative information on the status of the MIYCN practices and attributable impact on maternal nutrition and child survival and development. Objectives of the KABP assessment
The information generated will form the baseline for measuring change in uptake of MIYCN messages and help in scaling up of HiNi, capacity enhancement on nutrition in ongoing programming and monitoring behavioural outcomes. Methodology The survey will employ both quantitative and qualitative approaches to establish the prevalence of core MIYCN practices as has been agreed upon in the nutrition Cluster as well as AIM working group, focusing on the knowledge, attitude, beliefs and practices relating to maternal nutrition, infant and young child feeding, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) promotion interventions. The survey shall further explore the Communication approaches to drive social and behaviour change towards adopting optimal MIYCN practices. The consultant with support from IMC technical team, will ensure the methodology is presented to AIM working groups for approval and later validation of the survey results. The planning and implementation of the assessment will be done in consultation with IMC Technical team, field program managers and Health and Nutrition and M&E officers. Implementation of the Assignment Deliverables As with all population surveys it is imperative that the results are available to IMC as soon as possible. The report will be presented in English and will include at minimum: Introduction and details of the study population, study design (sampling frame, survey sites, sampling procedures, sample size, data collection methods, tools, training description, enumerator capacity, survey findings/results), discussion, conclusions/recommendations, and references. The annex should contain but not necessary be limited to a map, final questionnaires, sampling frame indicating the clusters selected, actual survey schedule, teams & supervisors, TOR. As mentioned above the consultant will conduct debriefing meetings with IMC field team and Technical teams and other relevant stakeholders.
