InterAcademy Partnership’s 2018 African Academies Diaspora Fellows Program

InterAcademy Partnership’s 2018 African Academies Diaspora Fellows Program (Fully-funded)

Deadline: April 30, 2018

The African Academies Diaspora Fellows Program 2018 is now open for applications. The InterAcademy Partnership’s Project on Harnessing Science, Engineering, and Medicine to Address Africa’s Challenges has announced a pilot program that will enable African science academies to invite members of the African Diaspora to work with them on policy initiatives and/or other activities designed to strengthen the host academy.

During visits of at least 7 days, Diaspora fellows will collaborate with the host academy on a scientific or policy initiative; or assist the academy in the development of a strategic plan, communications strategy or risk management strategy; or help with policy advisory mechanisms; or help strengthen the academy in other ways specified by the host academy, contributing specialized expertise and/or unique perspectives unavailable with the academy’s own network. Host academies might also invite fellows to deliver public lectures or take part in forums, thereby helping raise the visibility of the academy and its work. In exceptional cases grants may support two broadly spaced visits for one fellow at different project stages.

All projects should address aspects of at least one, and preferably two or more, of the following strategic frameworks:

  1. the host academy’s own strategic plan;
  2. the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) strategic plan;
  3. STISA-2024;
  4. the Sustainable Development Goals.

Benefits

Typical grants will range from US$4,000-$6,000, with amounts up to $8,000 considered if compelling justification is provided. To maximize the number and impact of grants to be awarded, cost-sharing is encouraged whenever possible.

Eligible funding categories are:

  • fellow’s economy airfare, visa, airport transfers, housing (to be arranged by host academy) and meals;
  • costs associated with hosting meetings, presentations, or other activities involving the fellow, including publicity and dissemination.

Payment mechanisms will be determined on a case-by-case basis. For example travel costs could be paid directly to the fellow, with the balance to the academy for local expenses; or the academy could receive the full grant and cover all costs.

Eligibility

  • Officers of any senior or young academy in any country in Africa are eligible to apply for funds to invite a Diaspora fellow for visits of 7 days or longer.
  • It is the responsibility of the host academy to identify a member of the African Diaspora to participate in the proposed project.
  • Members of the Diaspora may also initiate the process by approaching a national science academy in Africa to express interest in collaborating, but the proposal must be submitted by the host academy.

Diaspora Fellow Requirements

  • Diaspora fellows must be full or foreign members of a senior or young national academy of science anywhere in the world, or of TWAS, or of the Global Young Academy.
  • They must be members of the African Diaspora, as defined by the African Union.
  • Host academies are strongly encouraged to invite fellows born in, or having a prior connection with, the country where the academy is based.
  • Applications and final grant reports must be in English. Funded work and any resulting products may be in English or in the host academy’s primary language.
