IJP German-East European Journalism Scholarship Program 2018 (Up to 3,800 Euros)

IJP German-East European Journalism Scholarship Program 2018 (Up to 3,800 Euros)

Deadline: April 15, 2018

The International Journalism Programs (IJP) is pleased to announce their scholarship program for Eastern Europe for 2018. The scholarship is intended to give young journalists from Germany and Eastern Europe the opportunity to gain a personal impression of the current political, economic, cultural developments and backgrounds as well as everyday life in the host country. It offers the unique opportunity to work in a foreign journalistic work environment and to get an insight into the local media landscape.

With the Marion Gräfin Dönhoff Journalist Scholarship, five German journalists have the opportunity to work as guest editor for two months in an Eastern European editorial office (with a Russian-language medium). At the same time, the scholarship program will be offered to journalists from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the other CIS countries, the Baltic States and Georgia, who can apply for a two-month work visit to Germany.

The scholarship will begin in mid-October 2018 with a four-day introductory conference in Moscow. Immediately follows the eight-week stay with the Eastern European or German medium immediately.

Scholarship

  • The scholarship consists of a one-time payment of 3,800 euros. This amount is to cover travel, food and accommodation during the stay abroad, visa fees and health insurance. There is no compensation for the journalistic activity on site. A shift of the stay is not possible.

Eligibility

  • Applicants may be German and Eastern European journalists aged 23 and 35 who regularly work as freelancers, volunteers or editors for German or Eastern European newspapers, radio stations, TV stations or on-line editorial offices;
  • Good German skills are required for the Eastern European applicants;
  • Applicants from Germany are expected to speak Russian.

Application

Applicants are requested to send the following documents in German:

  • A tabular CV with passport photo
  • A letter of motivation
  • A journalistic report from the head of the department or editor-in-chief (which also supports the application, possibly ensures leave of absence for the duration of the scholarship and serves as a journalistic proof of activity)
  • Proof of language skills (certificate, certificate, language schools, etc.)
  • A maximum of three written work samples; Television and radio journalists are asked not to submit cassettes as proof of employment, but a list of outstanding contributions
  • A preference for guest media (for the German applicants: a preference for certain countries or the indication whether the application should apply to all these countries).

Applications should be sent to:
