JOB CONTEXT:

HI is present in Mozambique since 1986, implementing various projects in humanitarian and development contexts.

On March 14th, Tropical Cyclone Idai made landfall near Beira City, leaving devastating loss of life and large-scale destruction of assets and infrastructure in its wake. The destructive winds came with intensive rainfall. In the following days, entire villages were submerged underwater. Families were separated as they fled the flood waters, while others were trapped on high ground, unable to access basic goods and services for days. Over a hundred thousand of people were displaced, many having to flee with nothing as the waters rose rapidly.

Cyclone Idai has caused a massive displacement of child-headed households, single mothers or elderly-headed households, as well as unaccompanied children, who have been separated from their parents, or have lost their parents in the devastation. As of 12th of April, the Government had identified and registered 41,742 vulnerable people including children, people with disabilities, female-headed households and the elderly who had subscribed in the National Institute for Social Action (INAS) programme for support. 79 children have been reported as unaccompanied and separated in the district of Nhamatanda alone.

HI was already working in poor areas of Sofala district through a social protection project, funded by UNICEF. This project will be scaled-up to respond to the emergency with PSS and protection (identification, orientation, referral through mobile teams) component.
