The Amkeni Wakenya is inviting interested and eligible non-state actors including NGOs, FBOs, Academic Institutions, CBOs to submit proposals for grant programme entitled “Strengthening Civic Space for Realization of Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs in Kenya”.

This is a REPEAT CALL7 for proposals for projects to be implemented in 3 counties of TURKANA, KILIFI & KWALE with focus on the following 3 interventions areas:

Public participation (Turkana & Kwale Counties).
Support to marginalized groups (Turkana County)
Engagement of CSOs with county governments on planning, budgeting and project/programme social audit. (Kilifi County)
Funding Information & Duration
The indicative overall total allocation available for this call is USD 170,000.
Provide grants and technical support advocacy for adoption and implementation of public participation frameworks in 2 counties of Turkana & Kwale – 2 grants, each valued at USD 50,000 p.a will be issued to county-level CSOs in Turkana & Kwale counties involved in advocacy towards the implementation of public participation frameworks. These grants will run for three (3) years. A CSO in each of the 2 target counties will receive a grant throughout this support (2 grants per year for 3 years).
Technical and grants support to CSOs empowering marginalized groups in Turkana County to engage and hold accountability duty bearers- one grant, valued at USD 50,000 p.a will be issued to county-level CSOs in Turkana County involved in empowering marginalized and vulnerable groups to engage and hold accountable duty bearers. This grant will run for three (3) years. A CSO in the target county of Turkana will receive a grant throughout this support (1 grant per year for 3 years).
Increased capacity of CSOs to engage county governments on planning, budgeting and social audit. One grant, valued at USD 20,000 p.a will be issued to county-level CSOs involved in supporting engagements with Kilifi county executives and legislature on county planning, budgeting and programme/project social audit. This grant will run for one (1) year. A CSO in Kilifi county will receive a grant for one year. (1 grant per year for 1 year).
The project grant duration will vary from one year to three years depending on the category of the grant.
Outcomes
Outcome 2: Civic society voice in policymaking strengthened at national and county levels (Inclusive platforms for public participation and civic engagement strengthened at County and national levels)

Public participation: Four grants will be issued to county-level CSOs involved in advocacy towards the implementation of public participation frameworks. These grants will run for three (3) years. A CSO in each of the four target counties will receive a grant throughout this support.
Support to marginalized groups: Four grants will be issued to county-level CSOs involved in empowering marginalized and vulnerable groups to engage and hold accountable duty bearers. These grants will run for three (3) years. A CSO in each of the four target counties will receive a grant throughout this support.
Support to CSOs to engage county governments on planning, budgeting and programme/ project social audit. Three grants will be issues to CSOs in Turkana, Kilifi, Garissa and Wajir. This will support dialogue with county government executive and county assemblies on inclusivity of children, youth and gender in county planning, budgeting and county development. The CSOs will also undertake a social audit of selected county projects to ascertain the impact on service delivery
Geographical Focus
Actions geared towards the promotion of civic space will target six (3) counties in Kenya, i.e., TURKANA, KILIFI & KWALE. These 3 counties have well-documented human rights challenges, high poverty indices, deep pockets of marginalization.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a grant, applicants must:

Be a non-profit-making Civil Society Organization (CSO) registered under the relevant Laws of Kenya for not less than two (2) years.
Have a physical presence in the county applied for in the case of county-based CSOs.
Be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the project, not acting as an intermediary (no sub-granting).
Demonstrate prior experience of at least two years or more, carrying out activities in the field of development of the kind covered under this programme.
Demonstrate a good sustainability potential.
Have a bank account.
Must submit audited financial statements for the past 2 years.
Must submit at least one Letter of Endorsement from a grantmaking organization other than Amkeni Wakenya.
