The Global Forest Watch Technology Fellowship 2019 is open for applications. The GFW Tech Fellowship supports civil society organizations and individuals around the world to use Global Forest Watch in their advocacy, research, and field work.

The Global Forest Watch Technology Fellowship aims to recruit and train the best and brightest forest managers, protectors and advocates in facing growing threats to forests through use of pioneering technology solutions and big data, and support others in their networks to do so as well. The objective of the fellowship program is to scale impact by developing a community of GFW power users and champions to support the use of the platform in priority countries, and develop a shared vision on how GFW tools and other forest monitoring technology can be used to protect forests in priority regions around the world.

Fellows may be indigenous leaders, investigative journalists, public interest lawyers, foresters, environmental law enforcers, conservationists, or open data experts who have the passion to provide training and ongoing support to governments and local activists to use forest data and monitoring technology effectively within their work and to enhance their ability to participate in monitoring of illegal deforestation.

The GFW Tech Fellowship seeks forest protection advocates who are passionate about using technology for forest monitoring from a variety of sectors including: law, science, journalism, law enforcement, advocacy and conservation. This year-long program offers Fellows opportunities for skill-building, networking, and mentorship, including participation in a four-day tech camp and the Global Forest Watch 2019 User Summit in Washington, D.C. Fellows will also receive a stipend and access to funds for related activities.

Eligibility

  • Open to qualified candidates from across select countries in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Central America, North America, Pacific and South America.
  • The Tech Fellowship seeks individuals who are passionate about learning and applying new tools and data, and sharing that passion and knowledge with others
  • Fellows may have a strong tech background, such as in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or remote sensing, programming, or data science

The ideal fellow will:

  • Offer innovative ideas on strategies to protect forests
  • Exhibit passion for solving environmental challenges
  • Understand the potential of harnessing technology for social and environmental good
  • Maintain networks through which they will share skills and lessons learned
  • Represent diverse genders, geographies, sectors and educational backgrounds
  • Champion innovative solutions for tackling complex drivers of deforestation

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest in, and experience with, tackling forest issues
  • Demonstrated understanding of Global Forest Watch’s objective and approach
  • An established network of individuals and organizations dedicated to forest conservation or management in the country where the fellow will work
  • A concise, feasible and realistic plan for the 12-months of the fellowship, including a training and implementation strategy and clear learning objectives
  • A proposal with a clear roadmap that will lead to advocacy or enforcement results
