ICT Expert for assessment and digital solutions for rice and vegetable.
Introduction TO GGGI
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. To learn more please visit about GGGI web page.
Project background
Senegal’s agricultural sector has faced numerous challenges despite the government’s efforts to prioritize its development. These challenges include soil degradation, reliance on rainfall, population growth, outdated equipment, and limited access to quality fertilizers and seeds. The country’s focus on achieving food autonomy is crucial and the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE) recognizes agriculture as a key driver for poverty reduction, job creation, and food security.
In this context, GGGI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Equipment of Senegal and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea, is implementing a “Climate-smart agriculture and sustainable value chains” Project” in the Senegal River Delta. The project is a 39-month and aims to enhance food self-sufficiency and security in Senegal by addressing the critical underlying issues affecting the productivity and resilience of the rice and vegetable value chains.
The project aims to enhance the productivity, climate resilience, and sustainability of its rice and vegetable value chains through the effective utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital technologies. In this end, this project will conduct an assessment and benchmarking exercise to identify and assess the potential of ICT solutions in addressing key challenges within the value chains in Senegal. The assessment and benchmarking exercise of global technology solutions relevant to the Senegalese context will provide opportunities for Senegalese youth and women to develop innovative solutions. Additionally, a benchmarking exercise of global technology solutions relevant to the Senegalese context will be conducted.

To achieve this, the project aims to deliver a set of outputs:
- Integrate climate-resilient agriculture practices into standard farming techniques in Senegal (Saint Louis) for increasing productivity, resilience, and food security of the most vulnerable smallholder farmers
- Boost the ability of vulnerable smallholder farming communities to access postharvest processing, storage technologies, profitable markets through the creation of locally integrated hub and financial services, and
- Foster the scale-up of climate-resilient cropping, processing, and storage practices and create green jobs through capacity building, and the creation of Agripreneurship.
To address these challenges and harness the potential of the agricultural sector, innovative and climate-smart approaches such as utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital technologies are essential. These approaches can enhance productivity and mitigate climate risks within the value chains.
