Organizational Setting

The key mission of the FAO Representation in Somalia, which is led by FAO Representative (FAOR), is to assist and support the national government to develop policies, strategies and programme aimed at accelerating the Implementation and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the area of FAO’s global mandate and Strategic Objectives. More specifically, FAO’s response aims to address national needs and priorities in achieving food security, reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing agricultural, fishery and forestry sectors, and ensuring the sustainable use of environmental and natural resources and respond to recurrent emergencies. The current portfolio of activities of the FAO Representation in Somalia includes a wide scope of technical support interventions ranging from policy support through livestock and crop production, to natural resource management, Nutrition, value chain, food security analysis and water and land information management. FAO is also implementing several emergency, resilience-building and development interventions, with the support of its five field offices and close to 400 staff in partnership with the Federal and State line ministries.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall guidance of the FAOR for Somalia, Emergency Programme Coordinator and under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Officer, the Nutrition Specialist will provide crucial program support in the nutrition sensitive programming in FAO Somalia an in close collaboration with the Nutrition Cluster, Scaling Up Nutrition Movement, and key line ministries.

 Technical Focus

Assists in the provision of technical support to the formulation, implementation, and monitoring and of programs and projects related to nutrition.

Tasks and responsibilities

Maintains effective working relationships with implementing partners and key stakeholders throughout the project cycle, including to support implementation, facilitates monitoring and compliance issues and submission of reports, as required.

Conducts regular field visits to grantee working locations and to verify actual status of ongoing nutrition activities.

Assists in drafting training, education and behaviour change communication materials on nutrition in line with specific FAO projects.

Assists in organising and conducting training activities and nutrition related events.

Provides support to ensure timely production and submission of reports.

Supports with the identification of needs and designing of nutrition sensitive approaches to address the nutrition needs of the most vulnerable in Somalia.

Collaborates on various thematic areas within FAO for supporting more coherent and convergent delivery of nutrition actions at field and country level.

Supports the documentation and implementation of best practices and lessons learnt.

Represents FAO coordination and technical meetings such as the Nutrition Cluster, Scaling Up Nutrition coordination meetings

Performs any other duties as assigned

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements   

University degree in Nutrition, Agriculture, or a related field.

Three years of relevant experience in the field of integrating nutrition into agricultural projects and programmes.

Working knowledge (level C) of English and knowledge of Somali will be an added advantage.

Nationality of Somalia.
