Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been advocating and promoting the importance of multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach for health management encompassing preparedness, prevention, detection and response of health threats such as zoonotic diseases (ZDs), Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and food safety arising at human-animal-environment interface. The FAO’s Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) assists governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to address these threats and provides technical support for the sustainable development of their One Health initiatives.

Under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Global Health Security (GHS) Programme, several activities shall are being implemented in Mozambique and technical reports have been developed. Proofreading, editing and graphic design will be conducted prior to release these reports to a large public. Subsequently, FAO is recruiting a visibility and graphic design specialist to support the production and design of these reports before their publication.

The position is based in the ECTAD office of the FAO Representation in Maputo, Mozambique.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Animal Health Officer/ ECTAD Global Programme Coordinator (NSAH), the functional and administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in Mozambique and the direct supervision of the ECTAD Country Team Leader in Mozambique, and technical backstopping of the ECTAD regional team for Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), the  visibility and graphic design specialist will support the country ECTAD team to develop infographics (illustrations, photos, and info-videos) of all field activities; and assist the FAO Mozambique communications specialists to publicise ECTAD activities in both traditional and social media handles used by the organization.

Technical Focus

Implementation of the ” Supporting the Global Health Security Agenda to address zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and animal health in Mozambique” project (OSRO/GLO/1148/USA).

Tasks and responsibilities

The Visibility and Graphic Design Specialist will perform the following tasks:

1: Graphic design and layout

•    Quality graphic design of project technical reports and other project documents.  This includes:

    Design and layout of the technical reports including highlighting key messages, quotes, tables, diagrams, maps, logos, and illustrations/photos;

    Document structure (heading levels to be clearly differentiated using heading styles, to allow proper layout by the graphic designer); references and bibliography (verify accuracy and make corrections); list of acronyms;

    checking the laid-out proofs (in PDF form) for errors related to typesetting or missed during copy-editing (known as “reading against copy”);

    Check validity of links and uniform presentation of links (www. or http:// or ftp: as appropriate).

    Checking that page numbers, headings, subheadings, cross-references, headers and footers are correct;

    Checking indentation and consistency of font treatment; – checking that photos, illustrations, boxes, tables, etc. are correctly captioned/cross-referenced with text;

    Ensuring consistency – particularly of country names, currencies, numbers (thousands, decimals, etc.), acronyms – by following FAO house style; – indicating typographical and design inconsistencies as well as textual ones;

    Cross-checking chapters/tables/figures titles and numbers against the table of contents;

    Checking that each page is logically arranged as per FAO house style and Publishing at FAO: Strategy and guidance.

2.    Support the FAO Mozambique communications team to increase visibility of the country’s ECTAD programmes and promote awareness of its activities and impact. These include but not limited to:

•    Take standard videos, photos and other relevant documentary evidence during all field activities, trainings, workshops, and meetings.

•    Develop and manage an effective strategy for producing key ECTAD communication materials and surfacing them on the organization’s main platforms.

•    Identifying and increasing FAO-ECTAD participation in relevant events.

•    Develop the relevant information materials to be broadcasted for large audiences.

•    Ensure the visual identity of any communication and information material produced by FAO ECTAD Mozambique.

3.    Ensure proper visibility of the donor in all FAO ECTAD activities.

4.    Coordinates and assists in the presentation of information/training sessions to partners and staff.

5.    Collects success stories and shares them in the broadcasting and social media handles used by the organization.

6.    Perform other duties as may be required by the supervisor.

Liaison with the OCC will be maintained, either directly or through an agreed focal point/coordinator, to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

 •    University degree/specialized diploma in Graphic Design and other relevant training in communication, or related field in support of the expected key functions.

•    A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in report Graphic designing and development of technical report.

•    Conversant with design software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, WordPress).

•    Working knowledge (Level C) of English and Portuguese.

•    National of Mozambique.
