Are you a Youth-led group with climate-resilient initiatives specifically in Mathare & Kibra informal settlements-Nairobi County? Plan International Kenya and PlanBørnefonden is looking for you to achieve Green, Resilient and Inclusive Cities.

Purpose
  • The purpose of this expression of interest is to identify and support youth-led groups and organizations that are implementing strategic and sustainable initiatives that seek to address the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation in their communities, specifically Mathare and Kibra informal settlements of Nairobi County. The identified youth-led organizations and groups will be part of the larger youth-led climate action programme implemented by Plan International Kenya and PlanBørnefonden. Therefore, interested youth groups are requested to submit their response to this expression by sending the application as per the guidance herein.
  • The goal of the programme is to achieve Green, Resilient and Inclusive Cities through youth-led climate action.
Funding Information
  • The fund will range from 1000-5000 USD and is meant to develop and scale up existing youth-led climate and environmental initiatives with a view of achieving tangible improvements in the physical urban environment, making a positive impact on the daily lives of residents.
  • The fund will be administered in 3 grant cycles, each running for a period of 6 months and targeting different youth organizations/ groups at each particular cycle.
Types of initiatives to be funded
  • Waste management initiatives which deal with both organic and non-organic waste. These may include; recycling of plastics, metal, glass, electronic waste
  • WASH initiatives providing access to water, sanitation and hygiene services, including access to toilets
  • Green and clean energy initiatives such as manufacturing of cooking stoves, cooking briquettes and solar cooking initiatives as alternatives to unsustainable energy sources such as charcoal and firewood
  • Urban farming and agriculture initiatives to boost local food supply
Expected Outcomes
  • The programme’s expected outcomes are:
    • Youth-led organizations in informal settlements secure funding and scale up existing climate adaptation and environmental regeneration initiatives, resulting in measurable and positive changes in the physical, urban environment
    • Youth-led organizations are equipped with skills, knowledge, and networks to develop and sustain evidence-based, data-driven climate adaptation and environmental regeneration initiatives, fostering partnerships and local connectedness
    • Young people effectively influence planning and governance processes at community, city, national and global level
Programme Locations
  • Informal settlements of Nairobi, specifically Mathare and Kibra
Eligibility Criteria
  • Legally registered organizations or youth groups/networks with operations in Nairobi County, with a physical address in areas of Mathare and Kibra informal settlements. Those not registered, must demonstrate willingness to formally register within the first month of engagement ii.
  • Have a clear youth-led governance structure that is gender inclusive
  • Operating on principles of non-partisanship, non-violent and committed to promoting gender transformation and inclusion
  • Ability to demonstrate promising initiatives and at least three years’ experience in implementation of tangible climate mitigation and adaptation and/or environment management initiatives with clear results
  • Must demonstrate ability to prudently manage funds in accordance with the donor and Plan International Kenya compliance requirements
