The Business Opportunity
- In many Ethiopian regions, especially in rural areas, agricultural production methods are outdated. Often, the necessary agricultural inputs are not available in sufficient quantity and quality at the right time. Most farmers in Ethiopia are not able to afford fertilisers and/or agricultural pesticides. For this reason they are looking for companies that can provide small farmers in Ethiopia with the appropriate operating resources, advise them on modern farming methods and also develop innovative solutions!
- Large parts of Ethiopia have very favourable climatic conditions for agricultural production, especially in the highlands. However, this potential is far from exhausted. Due to outdated cultivation methods, yields are low even by African standards. The agricultural sector forms the backbone of the Ethiopian economy, as around 80 percent of the population works here and almost half of the gross domestic product is generated there. Ethiopia’s economy has grown at an average annual rate of 10.7% over the last ten years. This is more than double the sub-Saharan African average over the same period (5.1%). At the same time, agriculture accounts for 41 percent of Ethiopia’s gross domestic product. However, the majority of agricultural producers, especially small farmers, lack knowledge of modern and sustainable farming methods that can maintain their livelihoods in the long term and thus secure their income.
How your contribution to development cooperation works
- In Ethiopia, even in years with good rainfall the traditional cultivation methods are no longer sufficient to supply the domestic market adequately. While the country had around 40 million inhabitants in 1985, it is now the second largest country in terms of population with 97 million.
- The aim of this project is to improve production conditions in Ethiopia’s agricultural and food sector through the sustainable use of natural resources and the targeted use of relief goods and equipment. By increasing crop yields, the country’s food supply is guaranteed and the income of those employed in agriculture is secured or increased.
