DDP inviting Applications for Regional Partnership Funding 2020

The Digital Defenders Partnership (DDP) is currently soliciting applications for Regional Partnership Funding.

Regional Partnership Funding (RPF), DDP supports initiatives promoting online freedom and digital protection for human rights defenders, which operate in a single country or region. These can include initiatives that provide digital or holistic security support to human rights defenders, and support access to a free and open internet.

DDP will also seek to fortify complementarity and diversity among their Regional Partners when choosing which projects to support. They will actively promote exchange, networking, and collaboration among their Partners over the course of the year.

The Digital Defenders Partnership was initiated in late 2012 by the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) to protect critical Internet users – human rights defenders (HRDs), including activists, bloggers, civil society organisations, journalists, and other users of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to defend human rights, and keep the Internet free and open.

Activities

A wide variety of activities in support of internet freedom and/or protection of human rights defenders can be supported through Regional Partnership Funding. These can include, but are not limited to:

Supporting internet access in cases of shutdowns, slowdowns, censorship or infrastructural damage;
Training or accompaniment on digital security, or other aspects of security and protection to HRDs at risk;
Expert advice, digital forensic analysis, hosting or other technical services to civil society;
Lobby and advocacy work for digital rights and internet freedom;
Coverage of core costs for organisations or collectives with particularly high potential for impact and limited alternative opportunities in this regard.

The funding provided can be up to €50,000 for a period of 1 year starting in August or September 2020.

In order to be considered, applicants should share DDP’s commitment to strengthening leadership and agency among those most impacted by political violence (online or offline), and projects should align with their overall goals for the current strategic period. Projects which are led by organisations based in North America or Europe but executed in other regions will only be considered in exceptional cases. It is also of fundamental importance that all proposed projects take into account the needs of women and trans people, racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities, disabled persons, etc., as necessary.
