Climate justice links human rights, social justice, and principles of equality with the transformation of economies to ensure environmental sustainability. As the effects of the climate crisis deepen, the burden of managing its impact will disproportionately fall on the most disadvantaged communities. The economic and social shock of the COVID-19 crisis that continue to reverberate across Central Eastern Europe reflect the urgency of the moment. An inclusive approach is needed.

The Open Society Institute–Sofia Foundation, in cooperation with the Open Society European Network, is calling for proposals that activate local communities in climate action and environmental sustainability to advance climate justice, engage and empower underrepresented groups affected by climate change and related policies, and use innovative forms of citizen engagement to mobilize public support or influence state policies with climate justice implications.
