Call for Proposals: Journalism transforming the Americas

ICFJ and CONNECTAS are opening their first 2020 call in the search for journalistic investigation proposals from Latin America and the Caribbean.

This call for proposals is open for both journalists actively working in media organizations, and independent journalists. Stories will be selected by the editorial board in two evaluation rounds.
If your proposal is accepted, you will have editorial support from the CONNECTAS editors board, funds to develop your story succesfully, as well as the necessary boost for it to have a regional impact, crossing transnational borders. You will also be able to join the largest community of journalists for collaborative work in America.

Provision of funds
The five-month period for the development of the story starts from the moment the viability of the proposal is accepted, while the administrative staff work out the release of the first installment.
The amount for each project, in accordance with the budget, will be divided into three installments. The first one will be released after the viability of the story has been approved. The second one, when a progress report is sent. The third one, once the story gets published.
Bank and transaction fees will be attributable to the beneficiary.

Accepted proposals will have full editorial freedom on the stories.
Proposals with a preliminary work of reporting and good knowledge of the subject matter will be of special interest, as well as those with a collaboration component between journalists.
Selected journalists will accept the terms of republication and dissemination of the stories.
Also, journalists will accept the terms of editorial support, as well as the security conditions established for the stories’ follow up, and the preparations for their final dissemination.
It is imperative that those interested in applying do not have an ongoing fellowship from either the International Center for Journalists or CONNECTAS.
The Evaluation Committee is not obliged to disclose their reasons of the selection of the presented proposals. This will be done according to the quality of the proposals, looking for regional diversity, and according to the characteristics of the programs that are put in place for this call for proposals.
Proposal Requirements
The applicant should be a journalist with a minimum proven experience of 4 years.
Recently published samples of previous publications and investigative pieces will be required.
This program provides financial support of up to 3,000 USD, according to the budget presented in the proposal, which can be used for professional fees of the team, the general development of the investigation, and multimedia productions.
The selected journalist or the team will receive editorial feedback, following a model of weekly progress presentations.
He or she will volunteer 12 hours (in total) in supporting the CONNECTASHub and/or its members, in diverse activities subjected to prior agreement.
CONNECTAS will also receive proposals from English-speaking journalists from the Caribbean.
