The Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace Network is recruiting new members to join our Steering Committee. The Commonwealth Youth for Sport for Development and Peace (CYSDP) Network is the leading and driving voice, for youth in the Commonwealth, towards promoting best practices in Sport for Development and Peace.

Are you between the ages of 18-29? Do you belong to a Commonwealth nation? Are you interested in getting more involved in Sport for Development and Peace volunteer work? Apply now! They are seeking to add six members by February 2018. Please note that these are voluntary roles.

About

The CYSDP Network is a group of young leaders from Commonwealth regions, with expertise and understanding of Sport for Development and Peace (SDP), supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat to contribute to advancing sustainable development in the Commonwealth through sport. This network provides a platform for young SDP leaders to collaborate on important national, regional and global development issues. It also strengthens the capacity of young people to engage with their communities, policy makers and wider stakeholders. This approach embraces young people as catalysts for change.

CYSDP’s mission is to be the leading and driving voice for youth in the Commonwealth towards promoting best practices for sport, development and peace in their respective societies. Their vision is “to Advocate, Educate and Demonstrate to policy makers and young people across the Commonwealth, the benefits of employing sport as a tool to contribute to development issues.

The CYSDP Network Steering Committee consists of 12 members, who are selected based on the skill sets requires to achieve the mission and vision of CYSDP, and reflect the cultural, ethnic and geographic diversity that is a defining feature of the Commonwealth.

Open positions

The CYSDP Network is looking to fill the current vacant volunteer positions:

  • Caribbean & the Americas Regional focal point
  • Asia Regional focal point
  • Policy and Research focal points
  • Communications focal points

Duties and responsibilities

  • To work with the CYSDP Network Coordinator and CYSDP Chairperson in carrying out ongoing work planned and agreed by the Network in line with the CYSDP strategic plan, to deliver the mission of CYSDP.
  • To attend quarterly web-meetings and actively participate in the discussion.
  • To proactively seek the voice of young people from across SDP programmes and initiatives on advancing the use of sport in development policy and programming in the Commonwealth.
  • To contribute to the development of resource documents, formulate recommendations on SDP relevant to youth development and contribute to forums such as the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport, Commonwealth Youth Forum and Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting.
  • To identify and share opportunities for the group to advance their mandate.
  • Liaise with other Commonwealth and regional youth representative forums to advance awareness of SDP approaches and initiatives.
  • Steering committee members may be requested to represent CYSDP at regional events.
  • *Regional Focal Points are expected to liaise with respective country focal points.
  • *Policy & Research Focal Point is expected to compile data and research to develop papers, publications, recommendation, and guidelines for stakeholders.
  • *Communication Focal Point is expected to develop and implement CYSDP Network’s communication/marketing strategy.

Eligibility

  • Aged between 18 to 29 years at the time of application
  • Citizen of a Commonwealth member country
  • Experience with youth-led initiatives, projects or organisations with expertise and understanding of the benefits of employing sport as a tool to contribute to development issues. (this can be in a voluntary, educational or professional capacity)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a combination of: advocacy and campaigning; public policy, governance, strategic development/leadership skills; marketing, digital media or graphic design; or innovative, small NGO or social enterprise development are encouraged to apply.
  • Have a proven track record on their work, verifiable from existing references, online videos, links, reports, publications, blogs, etc.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English, IT literate and technologically savvy.
  • Strong administrative and organisational abilities, including an eye for detail.
  • Demonstrated drive and initiative, a self-starter with a can-do attitude with the ability to work autonomously and in teams, and in a multi-cultural work environment.
  • Available to commit 2 days a month? to network activities.

Appointments are made for a one-year term, renewable for up to three terms (up to the age of 29 years old).

Application

Expressions of interest are invited for these roles. Submissions should include:

  • CV and one-page cover letter clearly demonstrating suitability for the role, based on the qualifications and competencies outlined above.
  • An expository piece on one of the following themes:

o    Why sport for development and peace is an effective tool for youth development?

o    Where do you see Sport for Development going in the future?

o    What development issue would you address through sport and how

  • Submissions can be in the form of;

o    Academic essay or position paper (750 – 1000 words);

o    Short film (5 minutes);

o    Photography with extended captions/description for each image (5-10 images)

Only successful shortlisted applicants will be contacted and invited to take part in a telephone/Skype interview. To be considered, expressions of interest must be received by Friday, 2nd February 2018 at 5pm GMT (London Time).
