Job Description:
To lead, direct and manage the Environment, Health, Safety and Community (EHSC) function at the Company in support of the Company’s operational EHSC plans, in compliance with international EHSC conventions and standards, local laws and regulations, and in pursuit of the Company’s business and strategic objectives.
Responsibilities:
Reviews the environmental management plan bi-annually, or as changes occur.
Creates avenues for partnerships with competent persons/institutions/governmental agencies in order to improve the Environmental System to world class standards.
Develops environmental programs to protect and conserve biodiversity in the operational areas.
Leads environmental planning efforts to ensure the rehabilitation of mined out areas, thereby establishing sustainable sources for the commercial livelihood of the surrounding communities.
Initiates internal and external audits in order to ensure compliance with legal obligations and international standards
Drives, implements and maintains Company efforts towards the achievement of international occupational, safety and health systems
Designs and drives mine site safety programs to minimise hazards and preventable incidents to ensure that all employees, contractors, consultants, visitors and other community stakeholder are safe.
Develops and maintains a visible-felt safety leadership program across the mines.
Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines.
Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety.
Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law.
Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention.
Monitor compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations
Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions.
Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker’s compensation claims.
Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures.
Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics
Monitors and supervises key tasks of direct reports to ensure that outputs are achieved.
Provides and coordinates training and development to meet specific needs identified in the department.
Ensures that EHS department operate within approved budgets by monitoring expenditures and variances, and taking appropriate action
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
Tertiary qualification in Environmental management and/or a tertiary qualification in Safety and Health management
At least 6 years’ experience of which at least 3 years in senior position in an Environment/Safety/Health occupation
Sound knowledge and understanding of the legislation and regulations inclusive of legislative and regulatory bodies
Strong communication, negotiation and management skills
Strong computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Office
Strong attention to detail
