Who we are?
buildOn is a global non-profit organization that is breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. We run afterschool programs in high schools across the U.S. where urban youth contribute intensive community service and internationally we work in some of the poorest developing nations to build schools.
For twenty years, buildOn has brought education to over 65,000 children, parents and grandparents in these developing countries. Right now buildOn is breaking ground on a new school every five days and has built over 515 schools.
The Trek for Knowledge is an opportunity for buildOn Members from the US and buildOn partner villages in Senegal to share in a cultural immersion experience. US participants travel to Senegal, live in a community and help build a buildOn school.
Position Summary:
The Translator is responsible for
- Translation during Trek for Knowledge.
- Conducting host family visits.
- Guiding American trek team members in Senegal cultural values.
- Being available 24/7 to respond to emergencies
- Assisting the US Trek Coordinator during set-up (if necessary)
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 year working experience.
- Fluent in English, Sereer, Wolof, Pulaar and French.
- Willingness to work in remote areas.
- Willingness to work and live in the village with people of all ethnic groups in rustic conditions.
- Translation work is paid on the basis of time on Trek and is a temporary position.
