Applications Open for Lottery Environment and Heritage Grant Program!

Applications are open for Lottery Environment and Heritage Grant Program that will help to protect, conserve or care for our natural, cultural and physical heritage, or allow us to better understand and access these resources.

Priority Areas

  • Natural heritage:
    • protect and restore habitats and ecosystems for native plants or animals
    • protect and conserve native plants or animals that are rare, in danger or at risk in their habitats
    • improve public access and information about native plants and animals.
  • Physical heritage:
    • restore and protect places, structures or large built objects of significance to our history
    • protect and conserve a place, structure or large built object for the future
    • improve public access and information about places, structures or large built objects of significance to our history
  • Cultural heritage:
    • protect collections that are at risk of being damaged or lost
    • make collections available to the community
    • improve public access and information, particularly for young people to learn about and experience our cultural heritage
    • conserve and protect moveable cultural property, such as photographs, paintings, furniture and other artefacts.

Funding Information

Lottery Environment and Heritage makes grants for:

  • small projects, where the grant requested is for less than $250,000
  • large projects, where the grant requested is for $250,000 or more.
  • a one-off project may be:
    • a discrete stage of a larger, ongoing project; or
    • a single, stand-alone project.

Outcomes

Organisations receiving grants are expected to demonstrate how their projects will benefit the community, and contribute to:

  • increasing the access to New Zealand’s cultural heritage;
  • preserving and protecting New Zealand’s natural environment; or
  • preserving New Zealand’s history for future generations.

Eligible Projects

The following types of project may be funded:

  • projects that restore habitats such as wetlands, forests, riparian margins (the land alongside waterways), and freshwater, marine, alpine and grassland areas
  • projects that control pests and predators
  • native plant nurseries to grow plants found locally, for use in a bigger programme to restore a habitat
  • breeding programmes, including programmes for releasing or capturing native animals
  • community education programmes, kits and materials
  • walkways, bridges and/or boardwalks to protect habitats that are at risk
  • information materials or panels to raise awareness or tell the stories of the natural world
  • other projects that will contribute to the natural heritage priorities and outcomes, and benefit communities.
  • Lottery Environment and Heritage will also fund the costs of preparing plans, feasibility studies and reports for natural heritage projects. This may include plans for restoring or protecting an ecological area or for feasibility studies to work out if a natural heritage project can be done and sustained over time.
