Closing Date:8 March 2019

Location:Nairobi

Working Hours:35

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are recruiting for a Deputy Regional Director (Campaigns) to be based in our East Africa, Horn of Africa, and Great Lakes Regional Office located in Nairobi.
The Deputy Regional Director manages a programme staff of seven, including 4 country campaigners, the Individuals at Risk Campaigner for Africa (who has a matrix management line to the Campaigns Directorate), the Refugee Coordinator, and a Research, Campaigns and Communications Assistant. The role also involves convening the Campaigns and Communications Team.
Whether they’re addressing restrictions on freedom of expression , greater access to economic social and cultural rights, or abolishing the death penalty, our campaigns make a difference. Our campaigning staff will look to you for innovative strategies and solid support, both of which will stem from your strong communication across the organization and effective links with Amnesty International’s research teams, activists and the media. You’ll explore new tactics and techniques, capitalise on advocacy and movement-building specialists, and identify and foster opportunities for partnership and co-operation. At the same time, as one of two Deputy Directors, you’ll work closely with the Regional Director to manage the regional campaigns operation, control budgets and motivate staff.
ABOUT YOU
Thanks to extensive experience of leading strategic and creative campaigns at a national and international level, you’ll be well-versed in the campaign lifecycle – from identifying issues to undertaking impact assessment – all using sound political judgement. What’s more, you’ll possess significant understanding of  the East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great  Lakes region as well as regional and global human rights issues, trends and mechanisms. The proven ability to get the best out of people is also vital, whether that’s through coaching, mentoring, capacity building or training.
Having worked in a key leadership role in a complex organization, you’ll have no problem managing cross-functional, multi-cultural teams; and you’ll certainly know how to adjust priorities, hit deadlines and adapt to fast-changing political situations.
You will have excellent external representational skills, a broad range of key level contacts and networks. Above all, you’ll have the collaborative and creative approach needed to generate campaigns that resonate and get results. You will have excellent written and oral English and a writing level of written and oral fluency in a regional language.  Working knowledge of French, Swahili or Arabic is an advantage.
