Al Jalila Foundation seeking Applications for Seed Grants 2020 – United Arab Emirates

Al Jalila Foundation is seeking applications for its Seed Grants to support the brightest researchers and give researchers the opportunity to address important questions about health and disease in the UAE.

The main aim of the Research Grants is to encourage research activities relevant to the UAE and the region. Grants will only be provided to research proposals meeting the minimum requirements as measured by their scientific worthiness and practicality. The scientific worthiness of each application will be assessed by the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) at Al Jalila Foundation with the support from international reviewers, and experts in the topic proposed.

To proactively respond to the current local and global challenge of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and to help the UAE develop the capacity to proactively address this pandemic and other viral diseases in the future, Al Jalila Foundation is inviting applications to conduct 1-2 year research relevant to the UAE on COVID-19 virus.

Potential areas of research include: the pathology, diagnostics, epidemiology, transmission, therapeutics, and/or prevention related to COVID-19 virus in the UAE. For example, the impact of humidity and heat on the effect and complications of COVID-19 virus, the impact of COVID-19 virus on the UAE and how the UAE has dealt with it, etc.

There is no minimum for the grant amount but the maximum is AED 500,000 for a 1-2 year research. Applications requesting beyond the maximum will be rejected.

Eligibility Criteria

A UAE National or a legal resident of the UAE.
The proposed research work should be conducted in the UAE.
The Primary Investigator (PI) must be employed by an institution or partnering with an institution granting access to the facilities required to realise the research proposal.
The PI should have suitable qualifications to conduct the proposed research as reviewed by SAC.
PIs with a track record in research with publications in international journals is an advantage.
It is expected that the PI shall satisfy high standards of behaviour and character at all times. Any incidents or adverse indicators at any time would affect the continuity of the sanctioned grant.
Required Documents

Al Jalila Foundation Application Form in the given format.
For UAE Nationals: A copy of the UAE passport and Emirates ID.
For Non-Nationals who are legal residents of the UAE: A copy of the passport, residency visa and Emirates ID.
The above documents should be valid throughout the grant period. In case any of these documents need to be renewed, copies of valid documents should be submitted with the progress reports. It is the sole responsibility of the applicants to provide a copy of the valid documents.
A copy of the employment certificate.
An institutional confirmation of the support for the research as per Al Jalila Foundation template (Letter of Consent by the Institution).
In the case of joint submissions, required documents should be provided for each applicant.
A copy of the “Ethical Approval” should be submitted to Al Jalila Foundation within 3- months of the grant award. The grant will not be disbursed until the ethical approval is received. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to obtain the ethical approval.
Note: Ethical approvals not received by the allowed 3-months period of the grant award should be reviewed by SAC for approving the new date by which the ethical approval must be received.
