The Ukrainian Media Development Fund program is administered by the Press, Education and Culture Division of the US Embassy in Ukraine. The fund is intended to support free and independent media in Ukraine and to assist Ukrainian journalists, media organizations and non-governmental organizations working on media-related projects.
Thematic Priorities
Providing the media with a means of survival during the KOVID pandemic by:
Conducting trainings for journalists, in particular at the local level, on the topics of budget management, development of advertising strategies, studying the needs of the audience, monetization of online content and more effective use of new media.
Exchange of best practices and experiences in the field of financial stability through the introduction of membership, innovative ways to increase subscriptions, as well as crowdfunding.
Promoting cooperation and partnership between regional journalists.
Trainings for journalists on media ethics, combating misinformation, digital security and new media
Improving media content through training journalists in explanatory journalism and decision-making journalism, investigative journalism, storytelling, and news and other content production across platforms.
Improving the quality of Ukrainian journalism education by:
Conducting student internships and mentoring programs in leading national and regional media.
Modernization of educational radio and television studios at the faculties of journalism.
Support cooperation between journalism schools and local media communities.
Providing training (including online) on creating news content for television, print and online media, data analytics and journalism.
Promoting the development of professional journalism (such as economic, cultural, medical journalism, etc.)
Providing a favorable environment for the development of Ukrainian media by:
Strengthening institutions dealing with media ethics.
Promoting the development of self-regulation among journalists.
Monitoring of violations of journalists’ rights.
Promoting media literacy; conducting trainings on the topics of identifying paid materials (jeans), misinformation and manipulation in the media.
Support the development of small local media to create a more independent and competitive media sector.
Funding Information

The maximum amount of funding is $ 50,000. USA, but the average size of grants is 15,000 – 25,000. The amount of the grant depends on the volume of planned activities and the project implementation period, which can last from 1 to 12 months.
Eligibility Criteria
The Ukrainian Media Development Fund accepts applications from independent Ukrainian media – print, TV, radio and Internet resources. Party and state media are not eligible for funding. The program also provides individual grants to journalists and representatives of the Ukrainian media. NGOs can apply for funding if their projects directly contribute to the development of Ukrainian media.
Advertising publications are not eligible for funding; newsletters issued by non-governmental organizations; specialized publications focused on the coverage of narrow professional topics; projects that pursue party or political interests.
Organizations and the media are encouraged to seek sources of co-financing from other donors.
