2020 Call for Applications: United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture

The Secretariat of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFVT) has announced that the Fund will accept project applications for grants that will be used between 1 January and 31 December 2020.

 

The UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture is a unique and universal humanitarian tool available to the UN and OHCHR providing direct assistance to victims of torture and their family members wherever torture occurs.

The Fund aims at healing the physical and psychological consequences of torture on victims and their families, and thus restoring their dignity and role in the society.

Grants may only be awarded to organizations for projects that provide direct assistance to victims of torture and their family members. Such assistance may be in the form of medical, psychological, legal or social assistance.

Priorities

For 2019, priority will be given to applications for projects to be implemented in:

  • Countries with shrinking or limited civil society space;
  • Countries in the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Central Asia and the Pacific that are under-represented among current UNVFVT grantees.

Funding Information

  • First time applicants or organizations previously supported by the Fund should submit project proposals that do not exceed USD 50,000.
  • Ongoing grantees should note that project applications lower than USD 25,000 and higher than USD 150,000 will not be received.
  • Please note that the average grant size of the Fund in 2019 was $45,000.

Duration

Grants requested from the Fund can cover a given implementation period of up to 12 months during the calendar year 1st January to 31st December.

Beneficiaries

  • Beneficiaries of projects must be victims of torture. Beneficiaries can also be direct family members of victims of torture, who, due to their close relationship with the victim, were directly affected at the time of the event. Any assistance to be provided with the Fund’s grants should be linked with consequences of torture.
  • Projects should demonstrate a clear victim-centered focus.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applications from all regions will be accepted.
  • Only nongovernmental entities with at least 2 years of experience in providing redress and rehabilitation to victims of torture and their family members, including NGOs, rehabilitation centres, foundations, association of victims, private and public hospitals, and legal clinics.
  • All applications should be submitted in English, French or Spanish.
