WorldVeg is seeking a fulltime(a 50-60% time for the incumbent can also be negotiated to meet individual circumstances) ) Consultant Nutritionistbased in Benin to help design and implement activities under ‘Nutrifood’, a project funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund, Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council (GCRF-BBSRC) of the United Kingdom. NUTRIFOOD (‘The production and promotion of nutrient rich foodstuffs to address the double burden of malnutrition’) is led by the Royal Holloway University of London (RHU) in partnership with WorldVeg, IITA, and CIAT, and is beingimplemented in Benin and Nigeria. In Benin, NUTRIFOOD will work with the World Food Programme to introduce/improve school and home-based vegetable gardens in selected communities; collaborate with schools and communities to design nutritious meal plans for school canteens; and increase nutrition knowledge and awareness of targeted schools and communities.


The Consultant Nutritionistwill work with schools and communities to understand local food culture and preferences and apply this understanding to help design recipes and meal plans for school canteens. The Nutritionist will provide training to students, teachers, interested community members, and technical staff of selected NGOs in basic nutrition principles, the importance of vegetables and healthy diets. The incumbent will work closely with World Food Programmestaff, staff of selected NGOs and WorldVeg’sBenin staff to achieve project deliverables. The position will be based at WorldVeg’sRegional Center for West and Central Africa – Coastal and Humid Regions (WCA-CH) in Cotonou, Benin and report functionally to theProject Manager and administratively to the WCA-CH Regional Director.


Key job responsibilities:
• Understand school and community food preferences and habits and assess the meals served by school canteens;
• In collaboration with schools and communities, propose two to three recipes that integrate diverse vegetables (tomato, onion, chili pepper, amaranth, okra, jute mallow, gboma, etc.) with legumes and cereals, and other nutritious foods;
• Design/modify nutrition training materials in French and local languages on basic principles of nutrition and healthy diets, the importance of vegetables emphasizing nutritional qualities of vegetables grown in the school gardens;
• Organize cooking demonstration sessions at the schools and school canteensto encourage and promote adoption of healthy diets by schools and communities;
• Raise awareness among teachers, students, members of canteen management committees and Parents of Students Association on nutrition issues;
• Design and lead a post intervention assessment to measure Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) of students, teachers and communities about nutrition, diversified diets and importance of vegetables in human health;
• Write quarterly reports on nutrition activities and submit to technical supervisor


The Person:
The candidate shall have the following competencies, skills and experience and/or shall have successfully demonstrated these attributes in actual work situations:
• A minimum of an MSc. (BAC+5)in Nutrition Sciences, or related disciplinenutrition education with at least 5 years post-graduation fulltime R&D working experience;
• Experience in nutrition issues related to childrenand with school feeding programs will be a strong asset;
• Experience in nutrition assessment, KAP assessment and consumption assessment;
• Hands-on experience in improved African recipes with diversified vegetables cooking, would be appreciated;
• Experience as a nutrition adviser related to vegetable consumption to families with small children is desirable;
• Capacity to efficiently manage workloads and work independently;
• Speak and write French fluently, with very good working knowledge of English;
• Speak at least one local language of southern Benin;
• Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS-Office, R, SAS etc.) is required;
• Willingness to travel in southern Benin within the project focus school’s area;
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team in a multicultural, multinational environment, and ability to interact effectively with project partners and stakeholders.


The Reward: This is a one-year service contract consultancy position with a competitive lumpsum payment..The position is only open to Benin nationals or candidates with legal permission to work in Benin. The initial one-year offer can be extended depending on requirement, funding availability, and performance of the incumbent. The position is expected tobe available as fromOctober 26, 2020.
