Background and Purpose of the Job
Stronger positioning of UNICEF as a knowledge broker for children in the Gambia is a priority of the office. In this context, a Knowledge Management position is established in the front office section. This is to ensure that the full cycle – from prioritizing, implementation, organizing, sharing and use of knowledge on the situation of children -is guided in a holistic and systematic way to supports the delivery of the Country Programme Document (CPD). This candidate will lead evaluation to ensure independency from Programme side.
Under the supervision of the Partnerships Manager, the primary function of this post is to contribute to the improvement of the use of evidence so as to allow UNICEF to become a high-level knowledge leader and advocate for children and their rights in The Gambia because the knowledge that is produced is not used to its full potential, neither internally nor externally. Further investment in capitalizing this data and undertaking further analysis needs to be undertaken to inform programme priorities. It will also support leveraging significant convening power – to foster and support dynamic knowledge exchanges with development stakeholders with the aim of strengthening Government policies and practices and achieve results for children.
Key end-results
Develop and support implementation of a country office Strategy for Knowledge
Country office have a focused knowledge management strategy and action plan, which address knowledge generation, organizational dissemination and use by UNICEF and external audiences, for better performance and achieving results for children across country.
Develop a CO strategy for KM and ensures that mechanisms for implementation of the Strategy are well in place, well understood and properly applied by all programme staff;
Drives the identification of existing knowledge gaps on children in the Gambia and prioritizing of actions to close them;
Leads the internal UNICEF quality assurance processes and facilitates the additional quality assurance and ethical approval of research, studies and surveys by the existing external mechanisms.  Ensure that quality standards are adhered to and maintained in the production of proposals and reports to donors; facilitate timely submissions and follow-up to maximize on funding opportunities
Knowledge capturing, organizing and sharing
The products of research, studies and (sub)national data-collection across the country are of high quality and the knowledge relevant to children is effectively identified, organized, shared and used by a broad range of stakeholders.
Establishes, in consultation with Communication and IT colleagues alternatives for easy access to knowledge products for children, produced both by UNICEF and external stakeholders;
Develops, in collaboration with the respective programme sections, analytical summaries, synthesis, fact sheets, and briefs, based on completed reports by the CO, for use by a broad range of stakeholders. Support office for GIS mapping;
Collates existing knowledge on children in the Gambia – quantitative data, as well as qualitative research, to inform regular update on the situation of children in country;
Verifies child-related data where necessary or leads the process of verification;
Contributes to capturing of internal knowledge through documentation of practices and lessons learned, in collaboration with other sections;
Establishes and manages a consolidated system with validated data for children, disaggregated to the extent possible, with easy-to-generate country-specific or thematic profiles, including to be used for fundraising;
Identifies and supports innovative ways and platforms to best serve UNICEF’s data and broader knowledge needs through sharing of existing knowledge, including through Sharing experiences across communities of practice and networks.
Support to knowledge generation capacity strengthening
Provision of technical assistant and support to CO on KM and methodological issues and contribution to recording of lessons learned, good practices and innovative approaches to support achievement of results for children in programmes, and dissemination via multiple channels, to inform programme improvements at CO level.
Liaises with knowledge institutions/ organizations on the latest research and studies on children and ensures that reports/products are broadly disseminated;
Maintains a roster of experts (individuals and institutions): evaluators and researchers who are able to implement a quality evidence/knowledge generation work relevant to UNICEF;
Provides necessary support to CO and partners to build capacity on KM.
Qualification and Competencies
Education
An advanced university degree is required in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Demography, Statistics or a related technical field.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant professional work experience. Experience working in the UN or other international development organization, and field work experience an asset. Extensive practical experience in knowledge management and knowledge sharing strategies.
Language Proficiency
Fluency in English and another UN language. Knowledge of at least one local language of the duty station is an asset.

Extensive knowledge and practical experience in knowledge management and knowledge sharing strategies.
Understanding of the workings of the UN system and preferably some years of employment within the UN system.
Ability to analyze and integrate potentially conflicting numerical, verbal and other data from a number of sources.
Experience with mapping tools spatial data collection and GPS use;
Good communication and training skills

Knowledge management tools and systems for effective execution of core tasks
