The current Country Programme of cooperation is aligned with the Government priorities, the UN Sustainable Development Partnership (UNSDP) and Key Results for Children (KRCs) in the West and Central African Region (immunization, nutrition, learning outcomes, ending child marriage and ending open defecation). UNICEF main strategies include evidence-based advocacy, system strengthening, integrated programming across sectors, emergency preparedness and response, and innovation.
How can you make a difference?Provision of consultancy services to edit or develop communications and advocacy materials including but not limited to the following: human interest stories, advocacy briefs, brochures, booklets, audio slide shows or video scripts, concept notes/proposals, reports etc.
BackgroundThe UNICEF Communication Unit in Ghana regularly produces materials that are disseminated for advocacy and other purposes. These include human interest stories, advocacy briefs, brochures, booklets, articles, talking points, audio slide shows or video scripts, analytical reports and other high value advocacy materials/documents. They are used to share information on UNICEF’s vision and work with various stakeholders, including the government, civil society and partners. These communications materials are based on our interventions and give stakeholders an insight into what UNICEF does and how investments in child related programmes make a difference in the lives and future of children and their families.
Rationale for SSA contract / Long-Term AgreementCommunication and advocacy materials, as well as other documents are often required at short notice. The UNICEF Ghana country office therefore needs to engage consultant(s) on a long-term agreement to facilitate the timely and efficient delivery of quality products. The aim of the consultancy is to have someone who is readily available on a standby arrangement at short notice to develop high value and quality communications and advocacy materials that document UNICEF’s key messages and programme results. The materials will be used on UNICEF websites and social media platforms, in reports and other channels.
Specific tasksUnder the supervision of the UNICEF Communications Manager in Ghana, in consultation with other colleagues from the Communications Units, the Representative and other team members:
Edit high value communications and advocacy materials, including human interest stories, advocacy briefs, brochures, booklets, audio slide shows or video scripts, articles, talking points, briefing and concept notes, talking points, proposals, presentations, donor reports and other reports.Develop and write assigned high value communications and advocacy materials, including human interest stories, advocacy briefs, brochures, booklets, audio slide shows or video scripts, concept notes, proposals, or reports.Other tasks as relevant and needed (e.g. taking high resolution photographs and providing captions to accompany human interest stories).
Methodology and scope of workThe consultant will discuss the scope of each assignment with his/her supervisor, staff members from the communications unit, the Representative or/and other colleagues involved in each activity.
Expected deliverablesThe deliverables and scope will be determined via email before each assignment starts. They include the following: human interest stories, advocacy briefs, articles, talking points, brochures, booklets, audio slide shows or video scripts, concept notes, inputs into proposals, and reports.
Sample of PortfolioTo support UNICEF in evaluating applications, candidates should submit two samples of previous work that demonstrate their ability to develop and/or edit high value communications materials e.g. human interest stories, advocacy briefs, brochures, booklets, audio slide shows or video scripts, concept notes, proposals, reports, articles, books etc.
ReportingThe consultant will work under the virtual supervision of the Communication Manager in Accra working closing with the Communications Officers, the Representative and other relevant colleagues.
Payment scheduleThe consultant will be paid upon satisfactory submission of detailed deliverables for each assignment. As this is a long term consultancy, the consultant fees will be on pre-agreed daily amount and number of days and paid as and when agreed deliverables are met.
General conditionsThe consultancy will be performed via teleworking from consultant’s home country
All hardware and software requirements will be provided by the consultant.All final products and deliverables will be the sole property of UNICEF.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Sociology, Communication studies, Journalism, English language, social sciences or a similar fieldA minimum of [5 years] of relevant professional experience in developing, producing and/or editing communications materials, including human interest stories, advocacy booklets, brochures, concept notes, proposals, and reportsSolid understanding of UNICEF’s mandate and programmesHigh responsible sense of journalistic ethics and in-depth understanding of human/child rights issuesExcellent editing, writing and analytical skillsVery good inter-personal skillsFluency in English (spoken and written) is required.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
