Purpose of the Job
Within the context of Generation Unlimited Initiative, The Communication Coordinator is accountable for coordinating the work around AU 1 Million By 2021 initiative.
Background
Within the frame work of UNICEF-AU engagement strategy UNICEF AU/ECA Office facilitates engagement with the AU, in cooperation with Regional Offices and Headquarters divisions, so that UNICEF can be well-positioned to keep children and young people’s issues on the AU’s agenda, which will in turn contribute to accelerated Member State implementation of AU decisions and resolutions, leading to improved results for children and young people on the continent.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
•     Direct, coordinate and implement the communications strategies of the 1 Million by 2021 Initiative and ensure its effective implementation with all partners towards the vision of reaching 10 Million young Africans by 2021;
•     Coordinate and oversee the AU Youth Media Advisory Group to develop and ensure the production of creative campaigns including the #BeTheFutureToday, #CountMeIn, Gender Dynamics, Mental Health, and others, as part of the AUC’s Youth Engagement Strategy; and implement the products accordingly;
•     Prepare communications and advocacy reports, and online and print newsletters;
•     Work collaboratively with the Youth Division team to coordinate communications, content development (press releases, factsheets, talking points, web updates, videos, virtual events and social media), content writers, and other colleagues to develop creative multimedia materials.
•     Perform any other tasks required by supervisor within the scope of work outlined.

 To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
A University Degree Bachelors in Communications or related field,
A minimum of 2[Two years] of relevant professional experience working in youth development programmes in a continental context.
Prior experience working with the African Union would be an advantage;
Proficiency in one or more of the African Union official languages;
Understanding of the partnerships landscape in international development;
Expertise in youth engagement/empowerment and youth development;
Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
Relevant Skills
Superior knowledge and understanding of communications in the AU system, including AU guidelines on communication;
Possess good knowledge of and experience with new communication technologies including digital content creation and analytics
Experience in the area of youth engagement and/ or youth participation;
Practical experience in the field of international cooperation and regional integration;
Ability to develop clear communication plans and ensure implementation to achieve desired results;
Required Competences
Excellent interpersonal and team building skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;
Demonstrable focus on impact and result;
Evidence of strategic thinking and proven ability to organize, plan and prioritize work
Manage workload with minimum supervision;
A proven cultural sensibility and diplomacy;
Ability to work efficiently and structured in a team under time pressure and under difficult circumstances;
Ability to build strong relationships internally and with external actors.
