OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
BackgroundThe Diversity of Cultural Expressions Entity promotes the diversity of cultural expressions and the creative economy as vectors for sustainable development. Its mission is to ensure the effective implementation and monitoring of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and the 1980 Recommendation concerning the Status of the Artist. The Entity fosters international cooperation by providing assistance to governments around the world to design, monitor, and evaluate policies that promote the diversity of cultural expressions and the creative economy. It also coordinates and monitors the Convention’s statutory obligations, notably by providing support for the sound decision-making of the Convention’s governing bodies through knowledge sharing and data collection, analysis, and distribution. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed and magnified the cultural and creative industries’ pre-existing volatility. Due to the precarious nature of their work, artists and culture professionals were severely impacted. Drawing on policies and measures adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, UNESCO, with support from the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism,   published a policy guide entitled Culture in Crisis that assesses emerging trends, identifies new and existing gaps and offers practical advice to help position the cultural and creative industries in social and economic recovery plans.
Culture in Crisis is currently available in English, French, and Spanish, and will be translated into Korean.
Scope of AssignmentIn the framework of activities undertaken by UNESCO’s Culture Sector in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Individual Specialist shall, under the authority of the Chief of the Research and Statutory Meetings Unit, layout the Korean translation of the Culture in Crisis policy guide, by undertaking the following:
Following the pre-established layout (56 pages) in English, French and Spanish, layout the Korean translation of Culture in Crisis;Adapt graphics, figures, icons, symbols and visuals to Korean, according to translated manuscript;Submit to UNESCO a draft Korean version of Culture in Crisis by 15 January 2020;Review and integrate amendments and corrections to the Korean version of Culture in Crisis in layout;Submit to UNESCO a final proofread Korean version of Culture in Crisis in layout by 27 January 2021;The Individual Specialist shall consult the Secretariat to seek clarification as deemed necessary and shall submit partial or preliminary drafts in advance of the stated deadlines, for review by the UNESCO Secretariat, when relevant.The Individual Specialist shall submit an original signed and dated payment claim for each instalment due under this contract.The UNESCO standard rate for translation shall be applied.
Deliverables and TimeframeThe Individual Specialist shall submit to UNESCO, in electronic format, the following:

On or before 15 January 2021, a draft layout of Culture in Crisis in Korean;On or before 27 January 2021, a final layout of Culture in Crisis in Korean.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
ExperienceAt least 3 years of professional experience in graphic design and layout of Korean documents, according to pre-established graphic design guidelines;
Experience working with Adobe Indesign and the Adobe Creative Cloud;Skills/Competencies
LanguagesFluency in Korean.
Fluency in English
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
ExperienceProfessional experience in the graphic design of high-level publications in Korean.

LanguagesStrong understanding of English or French.
