UNDP/Tanzania Call for Proposals: GEF Small Grants Programme

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced a call for proposals for GEF Small Grants Programme to focusing on the conservation of the ecosystems.
Seed Grants
The Small Grants Programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF/SGP) is a development programme, which is implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Globally, the GEF/SGP was established in 1992 at the Earth Summit to compliment larger GEF projects by providing a window for direct participation of local, community-based organizations for projects that benefits the global environment.
The GEF/SGP operates under the philosophy that global environmental challenges can be addressed effectively when local people and organizations are involved. In Tanzania, GEF/SGP became operational in 1996. Its operations are coordinated by the Division of Environment (GEF Operational Focal Point), Vice President’s Office.
The Programme devotes particular attention to community-based projects, which link the conservation of the global environment and improvement of local livelihoods.
Priorities
Implementation of the GEF/SGP is now at GEF 7 and Operational Phase 7 (0P7). Priorities for GEF7/0P7 focuses on the following geographical areas:
Serengeti Ecosystem;
West Kilimanjaro — Lake Natron Ecosystem;
Jozani Ecosystem in Zanzibar;
Projects from elsewhere in Tanzania will be considered if they are proposed from other ecosystems of environmental significance;
Projects from other ecosystems, which will complement the Government or GEF Strategic initiatives will also be considered.
Focus Areas
Conservation of threatened ecosystem and species;
Sustainable agriculture, fisheries and food security;
Low carbon energy access co-benefits;
Chemicals and waste management;
Catalyzing urban solutions;
CSO-Government-Private Sector Dialogue;
Enhancing social inclusion (Support to youths, women, people with disabilities and indigenous communities);
Response and recovery support to COVID-19.
Funding Information
Grants of up to US$ 50,000 per project are given to successful proponents.
Projects Should Demonstrate
Project proposals are invited from NGOs, CBOs and FBOs focusing on conservation of the ecosystems and focal areas listed above. In addition, proposed projects should demonstrate the following attributes: –
Consistency with country priorities as articulated in National Development Frameworks;
Poverty-oriented focus: indicating that grantees (Providing their numbers in the gender-disaggregated form) will be less poor on a sustainable basis at project completion;
Address gender issues at project formulation, implementation, (Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) and benefit-sharing stages;
Innovation and show plans for scaling up;
Provide proof that ownership of the proposed projects lies with the local grantees;
Clearly indicate that supported grantees will be able to co-finance at least 25% of total project costs in-cash and in-kind;
Provide a work plan with monitoring and evaluation indicators;
The project proposals should clearly show how they will contribute towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
The project budgets presented in Tanzania shillings should not exceed the equivalent of US$ 50,000.
Criteria
In this regard, GEF/SGP is primarily a CSO — led and focussed programme. Only CSOs that include, NGOs, CBOs and FBOs are eligible for technical and financial support.
In addition, NGOs eligibility criteria include full compliance to the NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 (as amended).
