Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action.  It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Regional Economic Empowerment Advisor for West and Central Africa, the intern is expected to undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the Regional Economic Empowerment Advisor in the development of the flagships programs in the WCARO region;
  • Perform periodic reporting to Donors, and Regional Management team on programs progress and designated region achievements;
  • Actively prepare and participate in meetings/discussion with subject matter experts,  working level staff and other stakeholders;
  • Assist with resource mobilization efforts, including preparing concept notes and follow-up with donor agencies.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:

  • The intern must have studies in economics, finance or other similar subject at the university level. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Experience in writing proposal and performing research;
  • Interest/experience in private sector development in Africa and gender issues;
  • Research – Experience is preparing research note on subject matters, countries, sectors;
  • Experience of project management, private sector development, and outreach work a considerable asset.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French and English are required.

Application Information

UN Women will only be able to respond to those applications in which there is further interest. Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, and proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable). Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

UN Women Internship Policy

  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
