Applications are open for the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia Ambassador’s Distinguished Scholars Program 2020. The Ambassador’s Distinguished Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity for a diverse set of qualified academics to advance scholarship in Ethiopia as full-time teaching faculty members at Ethiopian institutions of higher education.

The aim of the program is to strengthen Ethiopian universities’ capacity to teach and manage undergraduate and graduate programs and enhance research capacity within Ethiopian universities.

Benefits

The Ambassador’s Distinguished Scholars will receive the following incentives:

  • Position as full-time teaching faculty at Aksum University, Bahir Dar University, Dilla University, Hawassa University or Mekelle University
  • Living stipend ranging from $1,775 to $3,775 monthly, depending on candidate qualifications (paid in the local currency, Ethiopian Birr)
  • Round-trip airfare (including airfare for one accompanying dependent)
  • 20 days of sick leave per year
  • Medical insurance
  • Visa and vaccination coverage
  • In-country advising and support from IIE Ethiopia office, to include periodic check-ins
  • Pre-departure Orientation conducted by IIE
  • In-country Orientation Workshop conducted by IIE and held either at IIE Ethiopia or U.S. Embassy
  • Assistance with identifying housing (provided by partner university)
  • Assistance with local banking (provided by partner university)
  • Assistance with work permit (provided by partner university)
  • If scholars bring a minor as their one allowed accompanying dependent, the program can provide a letter of support for admission to local schools. Note that local schooling options are very limited in all five participating locations.

Eligibility

Candidates for the Ambassador’s Distinguished Scholars Program will be academics with a terminal degree in any stage of their career, including postdoctoral candidates and professors emeriti.

Applicants:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree (including a master’s degree, depending on the discipline) by the start of the program
  • Participants should represent the diversity of the United States, encompassing but not limited to ethnicity, race, sex, and age.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are reviewed holistically, with consideration of the following:

  • Professional qualifications, including training, credentials, publications, and awards.
  • Teaching and research experience, including match of academic expertise with areas of specialization desired by the host institutions.
  • Ability to represent the United States and the best of American higher education through collaboration with and knowledge sharing at the host university.
  • Diversity of background and experience to represent the varied array of the American population.

  • Completed online application form
  • Statement Essay of up to 5 pages
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) of up to 6 pages
  • Academic writing sample of recently published or written work
  • A list of three references
