Program Description
BeninCajù is a multi-year project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under its Food for Progress Fund (FFPr) program. It is implemented by TechnoServe and other partners working in the cashew sector in Benin. BeninCajù uses a sector-wide approach that aims to improve Benin’s cashew nut sector in a dynamic of more productive, diversified and inclusive economic growth for the benefit of Benin and its population. Over the duration of the project (2015 to 2024), BeninCajù aims to increase the yields and incomes of 100,000 farmers, triple the national processing capacity, and catalyze the development of the emerging derivatives market, with the aim of putting the sector on a path of growth and success. The project began its main activities in August 2016.
Primary Functions and Responsibilities:
TechnoServe Benin is looking for a world-class professional to lead the production component of the project. The Director of Technical Production’s duties and responsibilities will include:
    Provide technical support to reinforce Benin’s cashew research center (CRA)
    Provide training support on cashew research and development, nursery development, training government extension staff in cashew production regions.
    Provide technical advice on cashew production; cashew nursery development, multiplication of planting materials and its distribution, establishment, upgrading and rehabilitation of cashew farms.
    Assist in the design of extension and training manuals on cashew production, multiplication of planting materials and processing.
    Advise on setting up irrigation systems and establishment of community based nurseries in the country.
    Undertake Training of Trainers (TOT) on Good Agricultural Practices in the cashew production areas, led by the Ministry of Agriculture’s ATDA4.
    Advise on suitable out grower arrangements and relationships between large-scale commercial cashew operators and smallholder out growers.
    Provide technical specifications for procurement of cashew production equipment, tools, inputs and other materials.
    Train staff in cashew adaptive research, including cashew softwood grafting techniques and other related activities.
    Design protocols for the establishment and maintenance of germplasm plots, scion orchards, polyclonal seed orchards and genetic trials.
    Assist and advise for arrangement of study tours for farmers, scientists and project management unit staff and identify regional and international conferences / workshops useful for the improvement of the cashew sector performance in Benin.
    Facilitate sourcing of polyclonal and clonal seeds.
    Facilitate the implementation of the MoU between Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) and the Beninese National Agricultural Research Institute (INRAB).
    Develop and facilitate the cooperation between INRAB, through the national system of agricultural research (SNRA) and the Universities of Abomey-Calavi and Parakou to build academic and operational capacity for cashew development in Benin, and also to development cashew value chain curriculum for certified training institution/s and universities.
    Advise in the development of cottage industries (small-scale level cashew processing units) to be established in each center of the participating region.
Basic Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s Degree + 12 years expertise and experience in the cashew sector; Or Master’s Degree + 8 years experience.     Doctoral degree in agronomy strongly preferred.
   Outstanding level of familiarity with the cashew sector in Africa.
   Strong technical management and research skills.
   English Fluency required
Preferred Qualifications:
 Experience working with governmental agriculture institutions and university teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
   Strong training, organizational, analytical and quantitative skills.
    Ability to anticipate demand, manage multiple tasks/projects and meet tight deadlines.
    Proven team player with strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
    Outstanding written communication skills, including prior experience drafting, editing and proofreading documents.
    Strong project management skills, including the ability to anticipate demand and manage multiple tasks and projects while meeting tight deadlines.
    World-class experience working in technical capacities in the cashew sector in various African countries.  Publications on cashew sector preferred.
