Background
Under the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for West and Central Africa and the substantive guidance of UNODC ECOWAS Project Regional Law Enforcement Expert, the successful candidates will work closely with project team members located in Dakar, Senegal and Abuja, Nigeria as well as national and sub-regional counterparts to ensure the effectiveness of the project.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specifically, the incumbent will:

  • Draft, edit, design and facilitate the publication of a West African anti-drug enforcement capacity evaluation directory based on available internally generated and open source materials;
  • Coordinate the creation, collection and formatting of training and conference presentation materials;
  • Draft official communications, press releases, speeches and articles for project team members and ROSEN management personnel;
  • maintain and update the project internet and social media pages;
  • Facilitate the production and dissemination of public information material through website, brochures, posters, letters, e-mails, and broadcasts in various languages as required reaching a wide public audience;
  • Facilitate the implementation of official travel missions and associated project activities throughout the region; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Very sound knowledge of and demonstrated ability to provide effective advice on concepts and approaches relevant to technical cooperation assistance, programme management, drug control and crime prevention; capable of representing the Organization and to negotiate successfully with officials of government, non-governmental and sports organizations; ability to use sound judgement and decision making skills to attain objectives.

Planning and Organizing:

  • Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans, prioritize competing demands and work to tight deadlines.

Communication:

  • Proven ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and conveying maximum necessary information, making and defending recommendations.

Teamwork:

  • Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:

  • Suitable candidates should be enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. programme in Criminal Justice, Law, Political Science, Public Health or an equivalent academic discipline;
  • Have graduated with university degree and if selected, must commence the internship within one year period of graduation from an academic programme;
  • Interested students must send during their application a letter from his/her university confirming current enrolment and graduation date.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat;

For the post advertised, fluency in written and spoken English and French are a requirement. Knowledge of Portuguese or any other additional working languages would be an asset.

Other terms and conditions

Duration of the internship assignment: the minimum duration of an internship is two (02) months. This period can be extended up to a total period of six months

Subsequent employment: the purpose of the internship programme is not to lead to further employment with UNODC but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Internes may not apply for or be appointed to any position in the professional or above categories and for positions in the field service category during the period of their internship and for the six (06) months immediately following the expiration date of thereof.

Cost: United Nations interns are not paid. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns are considered gratis personnel. They are not staff members.

Visa and Travel: Interns are responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas and making the appropriate travel arrangements for Dakar.

Official travel: Interns does not undertake official travel on behalf of UNODC.

Medical insurance: Interns are responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during their internship. They must provide proof of a valid medical insurance coverage to cover the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship.

Confidentiality: Interns must be discreet and keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and do not publish any reports or papers based on such information.

Academic Credit: Interns may receive academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship, depending on that institution’s academic credit policy.

Age: Eligible candidates must not be more than 30 years old.
