ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY: The Communications Manager will lead ONE in Africa’s media outreach. He/she will develop the Africa Communication Strategy for ONE in Africa and support the implementation of media strategies in ONE priority markets at key moments. The role will work closely with ONE’s global communications team and country teams across Africa to ensure ONE’s messaging across the continent is communicated most accurately and compellingly, through media platforms that inform and engage policymakers, citizens, and ONE‘s target audiences. This is a full-time opportunity reporting directly to the Africa Executive Director and will be part of ONE’s global communications network. It will be based in either Johannesburg, Dakar, or Abuja office. IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL: Communications strategy and planning: Lead the development and implementation of ONE in Africa‘s annual communications and media strategies, campaigns, and other events and ensure alignment with the Building out ONE-In-Africa plan In partnership with the global communications team, develop and implement strategies to tell the story of ONE in Africa and to amplify African voices globally. Localizing elements of ONE’s global communications strategy for the African market. Regularly supervise and analyze media coverage of relevant issues across the continent and identify trends and opportunities for ONE. External Communications (Media relations, Press liaison, etc.) Manage the relationship with media partners in African countries for specific projects as needed. This includes maintaining an up to date database of media organizations and partners. Pitching high quality and compelling story ideas and securing coverage in regional, national, international, and industry media (print, broadcast, and online media) Lead the development and implementation of proactive and reactive media strategies as required; Create informative and interesting press releases, press kits, newsletters, articles for publication. Organizing press events, handling interviews requests, and responding to requests from media relating to ONE in Africa and its work Proactively create media interview opportunities, prepare and brief ONE spokespeople. In collaboration with the Partnerships and Influencer Engagement Manager; Identify and structure media partnerships and relationships in ways that extend the reach and impact of ONE and its partners. Effectively harness ONE Ambassadors to generate appropriate media presence for ONE’s activities and objectives in African markets. Communication products Product Creation Lead the creation of communication products (including audio-visual products) for both internal and external partners Lead the creation of timely and effective communications materials in reaction to meaningful, relevant, fast-moving events in Africa when necessary. Liaise with vendors to ensure that all content produced aligns with the organizational directives, policies, and guidelines regarding issues such as (but not limited to) use of language, visual products, tone, etc. Product Review: Provide input to the preparation of briefings for ONE’s senior staff/high profile advocates in their interactions with government and civil society leaders. In collaboration with the Policy and Advocacy Manager, review, fact-check, and edit as necessary all media and communications materials for various audiences and ensuring their timely dissemination and amplification Metrics Tracking & Reporting Develop and share regular media reports to supervise trends and results Maintain an accurate record of all media hits generated by ONE in Africa in a calendar year. Content and campaigns collaboration The role will work closely with the Campaigns team to design, implement and evaluate ONE in Africa communication campaigns. Collaborate with the creative, campaigns, and digital leads to design and implement communications and campaign strategies. Contribute to production and development of web content as needed Internal communications Prepare and disseminate regular updates on programs to internal partners as identified and as needed. Responsible for the organization-wide socialization of the Building out ONE-In-Africa Plan Collaborate with market leads to align all communication activities for consistency across ONE in Africa markets Providing critical communications counsel to staff and volunteers WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE: A Bachelor’s degree in Media, Communications, or related field is preferred 6+ year’s relevant professional experience working in a Sub-Saharan African country, ideally within the international development sector in a communications or media role. Consistent track record of delivering effective media and communications strategies for advocacy purposes with elite, and popular media and specialist and non-specialist audiences. Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to turn complex policy information into accessible products. Strong interpersonal skills with experience of influencing partners and establishing and maintaining strong partnerships. A commitment to ONE’s aims and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work. Experience in leading people. Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment, across time zones, with the flexibility to respond to a constantly evolving work environment and shifting deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Fluent English essential. Familiarity with other languages of the AU desirable. Ability to consistently apply sound judgment and make good and responsible decisions. OTHER ATTRIBUTES: An understanding of the complexities surrounding collaboration in a global matrix organization.
