Major Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-person site evaluations and surveys from representatives at prospective venues (including, but not limited to; arenas, practice facilities, offices, and academies) for Basketball Africa League and NBA Africa to select priority venues, identify operational issues and areas of improvement at venues and to recommend solutions for the issues in the interest of the NBA and Basketball Africa League
  • Oversee real estate initiatives for Basketball Africa League and NBA Africa by coordinating with real estate advisors and landlords in-market, surveying and recommending offices spaces to accommodate expected growth and managing tenant improvement and construction of office spaces for BAL and NBA Africa Work closely with Africa facility operators to establish and maintain best-practices for operations including venue infrastructure, facility crisis management and near- and long-term operational guidelines and execution to maintain game and league integrity
  • Develop and maintain venue operational guidelines and facility standards for Basketball Africa League venues (including arenas, practice facilities, offices, and academies); update in consultation with Basketball Africa League’s President and NBA Headquarters
  • Supervise and manage suppliers, contractors, and third-party consultants working on the venues for Basketball Africa League events
  • Coordinate with Basketball Africa League and NBA HQ entities to ensure compliance with Basketball Africa League standards, technical requirements, budgets, and goals; develop, execute, and support strategic plans and programs in accordance with business objectives
  • Coordinate the implementation of any improvements to the venues necessary to maintain Basketball Africa League standards at the venues (including arenas, practice facilities, offices, and academies)
  • Review drawings and consult on the design of new venues for Basketball Africa League and NBA Africa including arenas, practice facilities, offices, and academies
  • Participate in contract negotiations with venues, agencies, and/or federations for Basketball Africa League events and NBA Academies as well as with real estate brokers and landlords for office spaces
  • Secure dates with adequate time for load-in and load-out for Basketball Africa League events
  • Coordinate and manage the set-up and production of the event to ensure the delivery of a high-quality event
  • Participate in project reporting including project site analysis, recommendations, construction status, scheduling, and budget information
  • Maximize revenue opportunities by effectively managing costs
  • Provide event support for Basketball Africa League games and events Participate in, and in some instances, coordinate, the hiring and management of in-market contractors, architects, project managers, and/or engineers
  • Serve as a point of communication and coordination with internal NBA representatives, venue operators and facility management representatives and represent the organization in all applicable industry/ trade organizations, and serve as a point of contact for all Basketball Africa League-related facility issues
  • Develop the business, build relationships, and execute programs to offer a high level of service and resources made available to the league Work across departments and understand the day-to-day functions and goals of each key discipline
  • Research, analyze and monitor trends and advancements in African venues to improve and progress venue and operational strategies and implement new initiatives
  • Research and identify new venues (including arenas, practice facilities, offices, and academies) that could be used for Basketball Africa League and NBA Africa Support arena-related Crisis Management Protocols Support office related facility health and safety protocols and provide office maintenance and operational support as needed
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Basketball Africa League team and NBA Venues Department

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Outstanding communicator who effectively collaborates with a variety of stakeholders, nimbly managing to influence positive change
  • Proficiency in English, French, and other African languages, a strong preference
  • Strong analytical, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interface at all levels of management and the ability to build a strong working relationship, and rapport with internal and external clients
  • Extensive conceptual and strategic skills and ability to work with and quickly understand all functional areas of arena development and event execution
  • High level of competence and analytical orientation
  • Established ability in areas of problem identification and conflict – resolution
  • Strong ability and vision to work independently and manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
  • Confidence in meeting tight deadlines and managing multiple projects with an expectation for excellence
  • Ability and willingness to travel 40-60% of the time
  • Strong organizational and computer skills including MS Office programs and the ability to use and navigate through various forms of computer-aided design (CAD) documents

Education/Experience Needed

  • Minimum of 10 years of related large-venue operations experience in Africa with a high-level project management, arena management or an operations role Experienced leader with global exposure and successful track record of managing sports facilities
  • Experience working on real estate initiatives, office selection, and tenant improvements
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed global organization
  • Experienced traveling throughout the African continent
  • Educational Background Required Bachelor’s degree
