IFC provides loans, equity, structured finance, and risk management tools as well as advisory services to support the private sector in developing countries. IFC invests in private sector projects that are financially and economically viable and have a meaningful development impact. The Corporation is headquartered in Washington, D.C. It has multiple hubs and country offices in the Middle East and Africa.
The Financial Institutions Group, one of IFC’s industry departments, supports projects in numerous financial subsectors, partners with local financial institutions, develops domestic and regional equity and debt markets and introduces new financing instruments. The goal is to develop efficient financial systems that will increase financial inclusion and fuel economic growth in client countries and improve IFC’s developmental impact.
The Financial Institutions Group is recruiting an Investment Officer to join the Investment and Portfolio Team, which originates, manages, and monitors IFC’s financial sector investments in Africa and the Middle East. The Investment Officer will report to the Financial Institutions Group Manager, Investment, Middle East, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.
The position will be based in Rabat, Morocco.
Duties and Accountabilities :
• Handle client relationships and provide insight into sector developments in client countries to anticipate new investment opportunities and/or performance issues;• Identify and analyze fundamental competitive strengths and weaknesses of investment opportunities or portfolio companies and identify financial and non-financial issues, opportunities, and risk/reward factors (e.g. business environment, country, and sponsor)• Execute IFC’s financial institution’s investments across the capital structure (debt and equity);• Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions, portfolio restructurings, rescheduling, capital increases, equity sales, etc;• Lead negotiation/documentation teams; use strong negotiation skills to develop solutions and overcome impasses in straightforward and complex transactions;• Lead investments in a portfolio, including both financial and development results.• Lead and manage project teams, mentor and develop junior staff; and• Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and advisory colleagues to add value to our clients’ businesses and achieve balanced development impact.• Contribute to drafting strategies for sectors, countries, or regions for business development.
Selection Criteria
• Masters in Finance, MBA or equivalent qualification;• A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience covering the financial sector, preferably in an investment-related function;• Excellent understanding of financial and operational characteristics of financial institutions;• Experience in emerging markets;• Sound client relationship skills, supervise record and ability to focus on client needs and deliver transactions;• Strong financial and credit skills and proven record to structure a variety of complex financial instruments (debt and equity);• Sound business judgment and strong problem solving/negotiation skills, as well as ability to work optimally on simultaneous projects under time pressure;• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French;• Ability to mentor junior investment staff;• Genuine interest in development finance and working in a multicultural environment.
