In Ethiopia, the current food composition table (FCT) is outdated, limiting the ability for the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Livestock along with agriculture, nutrition, private sector and other development partners from adequately understanding what Ethiopians are eating, the quality of food being consumed, and most importantly, how to guide policy and programs on better diets for human health and nutrition. Ethiopia’s FCT was revised in 1997 and published in 1998 with FAO support. The 1998 version has many missing values in different food items, and some of the testing parameters which were used for the estimation of nutrient content of those food items are outdated and no longer used as officially recognized method of analysis. Further, the diet have changed over years in the country. The present project will be implemented, in terms of research aspects, by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute. Food sample collection, partial laboratory analysis when relevant and data review will be part of their tasks.
Reporting Lines
Under the general guidance of the FAO Representative (FAOR), technical guidance of the project’s senior consultant and food composition/INFOODS experts, in collaboration with the food composition experts in the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, and the direct supervision of the team leader – RI1/SO1, the national coordinator for the FCT project will support the technical implementation of the project “MTF/ETH/100/BMG – Support to the Government of Ethiopia for updating the national food composition table (FCT) and establishing a related database”.

Tasks and responsibilities
He/she will coordinate the smooth implementation of the project through undertaking the following duties and responsibilities:
Manage the project through work planning, budget management, monitoring and evaluation, follow-up with the implementing partner (EPHI) and other partners to ensure all activities are timely and adequately held;
Provide technical backstopping to the smooth implementation of the project and ensure consistency among the various components of the project and related activities, as foreseen by the project document;
Support the organization of activities according to EPHI’s business/implementation plan;
Ensure regular communication between EPHI and Government counterparts, FAO team and the donor;
Prepare timely donor’s reports according to requirements;
Liaise with FAO sub regional, regional, HQ based nutrition officers and international INFOODS/Food Composition experts to ensure the project can benefit from and contribute to regional and global nutrition initiatives, and mobilize technical support from the regional office and HQ to support project implementation.
Perform other related duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
Advanced University degree in epidemiology, research, nutrition, food-related data management, or related field;
At least 7 years of relevant experience in food composition data management which includes data evaluation, compilation and management, and food matching along with relevant publications ;
Working language of English ;
National of Ethiopia.
