The project’s main objective is to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in council forests in order to improve biodiversity conservation, reduce emissions and enhance carbon stocks, and improve livelihoods of local communities.

This objective will be achieved through empowering councils targeted by the project to better manage their forests by improving their technical skills and tools to: implement SFM practices, assess and monitor biodiversity, restore degraded forest areas, measure and monitor carbon stocks, and promote sustainable alternative forest-based livelihoods. The project is structured into four interlinked technical components: Establishment of council forests for sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation (Component 1); Capacity building to strengthen biodiversity conservation and SFM in council forests (Component 2); Capacity building for the management of forest carbon (Component 3); and Ecosystem restoration and enhancement of carbon stocks (Component 4). With a view to strengthening the technical setting of the project coordination unit, a national consultant project forest carbon technical expert will be recruited to provide technical support in the project activities related to forest carbon. management.
Reporting LinesThe project forest carbon technical specialist will be under the direct supervision of the FAO Representative in Cameroon and the technical guidance of the FAO Lead Technical Officer (LTO) of the project.
Technical FocusEnvironmental science, carbon inventory, forest management, natural resource management, forestry, geography or other relevant specialization.

Tasks and responsibilities
The project forest carbon technical specialist will:Be responsible for organizing and providing technical support to workshops, meetings and training activities of the project related to forest carbon;
Provide technical inputs on methodologies/approaches and field planning and implementation of project activities related to forest carbon ;Provide technical support to the planning and organization of consultants and LoA partners field missions related to the implementation of forest carbon activities in the council forests;Provide technical advice and support to consultants and LoA partners on the identification, mapping, inventory and establishment of forest carbon conservation sites within council forests;Provide technical advice and support on carbon stocks measuring, management and monitoring in the council forests; Provide technical advice and support to consultants and LoA partners with regards to the improvement of the project database on forest carbon in council forests;Provide first-hand technical support and guidance to consultants and LoA partners on urgent requests received related to forest carbon before getting detailed guidance from the LTO;Review and give inputs for improvement to technical draft reports produced by consultants and partners (LoAs) on project activities related to forest carbon before submission to LTO for final review and technical clearance;Be responsible for monitoring project consultants and partners’ technical performance in the implementation of the project activities related to forest carbon ;Represent the project in relevant meetings in Cameroon on issues related to forest carbon, seeking to facilitate coordination and synergies with other projects on forest carbon in Cameroon;Complete the GEF CC tracking tools and provide technical advice to tackle CC risks that might prevent the achievement of the GEF project’s objectives related to forest carbon management;Provide technical support to the preparation and edit of technical reports, technical guidelines and publications based on the project’s forest carbon data and contribute to other publications associated with the project results;Perform other related duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements  University graduate degree Environmental science, carbon inventory, forest management, natural resource management, forestry, geography or other relevant specialization.
A minimum of 05 years of relevant professional experience, including practical experience in forest carbon and/or carbon management.National of Cameroon or resident in the country with a regular work permit.
