Organizational SettingFAO is implementing the European Union funded project “Transforming Zimbabwe’s Animal Health and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS)/ Food Safety (FS) Systems for the Future” (SAFE) under the Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme (ZAGP).  The project focuses on building the capacity for Animal Disease Control and Sanitary and Phytosanitary & Food Safety services in the livestock sector. The overall objective of the project is to transform Zimbabwe’s animal health, sanitary and phytosanitary/food safety systems for improved livestock productivity, food safety and consumer safety to enhance market access. The project is being implemented throughout the eight rural provinces of Zimbabwe from March 2019 to May 2022.

Reporting LinesWorking under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Zimbabwe, and in close collaboration with the head of operations, the lead technical officer and the National Project Coordinator, the Livestock Business Management Specialist will provide expert technical support to the project implementation team (PMT).  

Technical Focus

The technical areas/profiles covered will be as follows:
Support the livestock business units under the PPP arrangement such as the Anchor Animal Health Management Centres (AAMHCS)the vaccine production, distribution and sales at the CVLKnowledge sharing and capacity buildingLivestock production information management systems Tasks and responsibilitiesProvide expert advice on all livestock business development related matters,  regulations and SOPs to the project team for smooth project implementation.Provide technical back-up on business management concepts to the targeted business units under SAFE such as the animal health management centres and vaccine production unit.Participate the setting up of coordination platforms such as the livestock business forum (LBF) and animal production and health and food safety under the one health concept.Lead the development of specifications for livestock equipment, infrastructure, accessories and services on vaccine production, distribution and sales.Provide technical analyses of the business units under PPP and advise the partners accordingly.Participate in the development and testing of the national livestock identification and traceability systems (LITS).Collaborate and build healthy synergies between the farmers associations, public and private sectors for the establishment of sustainable Public Private Partnerships (PPP) with specific reference to establishment of quality payment schemes in selected livestock value chains. Work closely with the animal health specialist, policy specialist and the Food safety Specialist to guide the processes of livestock and animal health related policies, strategies, and regulations for the benefit of livestock enterprises.Contribute to the processes of review of the curriculum for training veterinary technical field staff and the environmental and port health field technical staffParticipate in project monitoring and drawing up lessons learnt and course corrections.Perform other related duties, including the direct implementation of some technical activities, as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum RequirementsAn advanced degree in Business Management or related field
Advanced degree in Animal Science is a distinct advantage.At least ten years of experience in the livestock production sector, animal health, extension and/or research.Excellent English, communication, facilitation and computer skillsNational of Zimbabwe FAO Core CompetenciesResults Focus
