EVZ Foundation announces Call for Proposals for “Young People remember”

Deadline: 20 April 2020

The EVZ Foundation implements internationally oriented parts of the “Young People Remember” federal program with funding from the Federal Foreign Office. Coming to terms with Nazi tyranny and fighting racism, anti-Semitism, racism against Roma and Sinti, and homophobia are important foundations of democracy and liberal society. The “Young People Remember” federal program aims to provide greater support for commemorative institutions and the remembrance of Nazi injustice and enable more young people to engage with history.

By promoting international encounters between young people, the program aims to strengthen factual knowledge of the causes, developments, and dimensions of National Socialist crimes. In this context, particular importance is attached to developments ranging from devaluation and exclusion to the dehumanization of certain groups. The relevance of history and historical awareness and their relationship to the world young people live in is to play a key role in the projects.

Through personal encounters at historical locations and engagement with historical events and experiences, the EVZ Foundation also strives to contribute to strengthening the European idea. It is important that the project work includes the broad spectrum of historical sites of Nazi persecution and extermination in Central and Eastern Europe (e.g. former ghettos, forced labor camps, concentration camps, mass execution sites). Developing and testing new methods and formats for encounters between young people is the focus of this call for proposals.

The Foundation will fund bilateral and multilateral encounters between youths and young adults at historical sites of Nazi persecution in Europe. In the process, approaches are to be tested that take particular account of the reference to the everyortung Zukunft (EVZ) Fouday lives of young people and different narratives of history and remembrance.

Ideally, the encounters should begin or strengthen longterm cooperation between educational institutions and memorials and places of remembrance in Germany, other European countries, and Israel. The drafting of a corresponding cooperation agreement may be part of the project, but is not a condition of approval.

Encounters at a minimum of two historical sites of National Socialist persecution or extermination – particularly in Central and Eastern Europe – are to be at the center of each encounter project.
There must be participating youth groups in the countries visited.
Reciprocal project visits by young people to the participating countries are a prerequisite in order to allow for multi-perspectivity, with the exception of international summer camps and projects involving more than three countries.
In addition, further encounters at other historical sites of Nazi persecution or extermination in Germany and other Western European countries can take place within a project.
With regard to projects involving Israeli youth groups and educational organizations, encounters in Israel are also possible.
Several encounter projects with different youth groups can take place as part of an overall project.
In your concept, please explain the different formats and methods you would like to implement for the youth encounters.

develop and test contemporary formats of historical education at historical sites, incorporating or expanding on proven project forms and methods (e.g. artistic formats such as theater, performance, music, film, video, festivals, bar camps, and digital tools in the social media sector)
involve young people to a large extent in the design and implementation of projects.
Eligibility Criteria

The projects are open to youths and young adults aged between 14 and 27. The call is aimed at school students, university and college students, and young people from different professional and technical backgrounds, such as young artists, police cadets, trainees, or young professionals of all professions.
The Foundation supports non-profit organizations and institutions under state and municipal sponsorship from Germany other European countries, and Israel that are active in formal and non-formal education and have experience in working on the history of National Socialism (e.g. youth education centers, youth centers, schools, universities, memorials, historical learning sites, museums, associations, cultural institutions, and other civil society stakeholders).
Applicant organizations may have their headquarters in Germany, other European countries, or Israel. However, it is a prerequisite that a German organization is involved in the project either as an applicant or as a cooperation partner.
The cooperation of different project sponsors must also be identifiable in the project cost plan. The project executing agencies must ensure that the project is bilateral or multilateral by providing a suitable team or cooperation with other agencies. When visiting historical sites of Nazi persecution and extermination, an educational institution in the respective country should always be included as a cooperation partner (e.g. the educational department of a concentration camp memorial). During the application phase, the field should be explored with regard to potential partnerships.
The funded projects are accompanied by transnational networking and further education meetings on youth-relevant topics in the field of remembrance culture. Your experience also serves the further development of the support program, so the Foundation evaluates the projects with you. The working language is English.
