Embassy of Canada in Ukraine launches Canada Fund for Local Initiatives to specifically Address COVID-related Needs

The Embassy of Canada in Ukraine has launched a special call for proposals for the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) which will specifically address COVID-related needs impacting human dignity, gender equality, economic growth and peace & security.

The CFLI is a program designed to support small-scale, high-impact projects that align with Global Affairs Canada’s thematic priority areas for engagement. The program is directed at projects conceived and designed predominantly by local partners.

The CFLI also serves to support positive bilateral relations between Canada and Ukraine and its civil society, by deepening contacts and supporting local endeavors.

Thematic Priorities

All projects must address a need created by the COVID-19 crisis, and align with at least one of the following CFLI thematic risks:

Growth that works for everyone, including women’s economic rights, decent jobs and entrepreneurship, investing in the poorest and most vulnerable, and safeguarding economic gains;
Peace and security, with a focus on conflict prevention and peace building
Funding Information

The average CFLI contribution for one project is usually around CAD $ 25,000 (contribution amounts vary depending on the project, and usually the maximum allocation amount is CAD $ 50,000 per proposal). Please note that all contributions are made to Canadian Dollars and then converted to the Ukrainian Hryvnia.

Duration

All projects must be completed between the date of signature of the Agreement and February 28, 2021.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to qualify for a Canada Fund contribution, applicants must meet the following basic eligibility requirements:
Be an established Ukrainian local community group or organization, namely:
Local academic institutions working on local projects;
Local NGOs, community and non-profit organizations;
International, intergovernmental, multilateral and regional institutions, organizations and agencies working on local development activities;
Municipal, regional or national government institutions or agencies working on local projects;
Canadian non-governmental and non-for-profit organizations that are working on local development activities through a local office.
Be prepared to submit all relevant registration documents issued by the Ukrainian state authorities;
Have an active bank account with a Ukrainian financial institution and be prepared to submit information about it together with the application form;
Submit a completed funding application (together with the Budget) in the Embassy of Canada scholarship form;
Be able to demonstrate a tangible benefit to the target group.
The majority of CFLI funding is directed toward local civil society organizations (including non-governmental organizations) and other institutions working at the local level. Other entities, such as international, intergovernmental, multilateral and regional organizations may be eligible for funding, provided they are working with local partners and on local projects that are consistent with the objectives of the CFLI. Similarly, municipal, regional, or national government institutions may receive funding provided that their projects are essentially local in nature.
