Applications are open for Concern Worldwide’s National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership: NNPHL.6 Training Course! The National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership is an innovative training program that utilizes innovative pedagogies to combine a rigorous academic curriculum with practical experiential learning including mentorship and individual assignments.

The program, funded by the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) and organized in partnership with International Medical Corps (IMC) and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) and with technical support from Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health.

About the Program

NNPHL.6: Prioritizing participants from Africa, the in-person intensive training will take place in East Africa (location TBD), July 7—12, 2019. 

NNPHL is designed for exceptional humanitarian professionals working for non-governmental or community-based organizations in humanitarian settings. The ideal participant will aspire to take on decision-making and management responsibilities in the humanitarian sector.

By the end of this learning process, NNPHL participants will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take on leadership responsibilities within a variety of humanitarian organizations, ultimately improving the delivery of services to those in need of humanitarian assistance.

NNPHL is a blended learning program, which requires an in-person as well as a remote time commitment. Successful applicants for NNPHL will be required to:

  • Travel to the designated location for the in-person training course for approximately five/six days
  • Complete course pre-requisites and participate actively in all distance learning activities, tentatively scheduled for a five-month period. We expect an average time commitment of 1-2 hours each week. Please note that participants who do not engage in the distance learning environment will not be invited to the in-person course and will not be able to continue with the program.
  • Participate in a coaching program; each participant will be assigned a coach who will provide coaching sessions for approximately four months. We expect an average time commitment of 1-2 hours each month.
  • Complete the NNPHL Assignments. The time commitment for the two individual assignments will vary from participant-to-participant as it is based on his or her self-selected assignments.

Training components for the program include:

  • In-person leadership training course
  • Distance learning
  • Experiential learning

Benefits

  • Costs required to participate in the regionally-based, NNPHL leadership training courses (i.e., course fees, visa fee, round-trip flight to the in-person training location, accommodation and meals during the in-person training only) will be covered by NNPHL.
  • Please note that any incidental costs are the sole responsibility of the NNPHL participant (i.e.telephone usage, additional food expense, etc.), and NNPHL does not provide a per diem.

Eligibility

NNPHL is designed for exemplary, mid-level career humanitarian professionals working for non-governmental or community-based organizations in humanitarian settings. All participants of NNPHL will meet a standard set of minimum requirements: 

  • Must have a demonstrated interest in pursuing leadership roles in the humanitarian sector
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English with proficiency
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree or a comparable academic or professional qualification
  • Must be available to participate in the course which begins April 2019 and will conclude in October 2019. (including the in-person training, distance learning and experiential learning)
  • Must have the permission of your employer to participate in all aspects of the program
  • Must have reached a mid-level position in a non-governmental or community-based organization
  • Experience in at least one or more humanitarian emergency situations
  • Must aspire to take on leadership roles in and have a commitment to the humanitarian sector
  • Must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date of the in-person training course
  • Must not be enrolled or actively participating in a Master’s Degree program of PhD program during the time of the training course

Please note that expatriate staff are not eligible for NNPHL blended learning courses, nor are professionals working at UN agencies or government affiliated organizations. However, the forthcoming NNPHL E-Learning Course will be available to everyone at no cost.

Selection Criteria

  • With a focus on strengthening the leadership capacity of national level staff, NNPHL will prioritize candidates working with national NGOs and community-based organizations. A limited number of spots will be available for national staff working at international NGOs.
  • For each regional workshop, NNPHL will prioritize applicants from the corresponding region. Please read the Eligibility Requirements above and ensure that you meet the criteria before applying.
  • Please note that expatriate staff are not eligible for NNPHL blended learning courses, nor are professionals working at UN agencies or government affiliated organizations. However, the forthcoming NNPHL E-Learning Course will be available to everyone at no cost.
  • NNPHL has a commitment to maintaining a gender balance for each iteration of the course, and ensuring that women have improved access to leadership training. For that reason we especially encourage women humanitarian professionals to apply for the program.

Application

  • The online application does not allow you to save your work and return to the application at a later time. Partial applications will not be considered so make sure you answer every question. We recommend that you copy the short-answer essay questions below and save them on a Word document. When you are ready to submit your application, copy and paste your answers to the online application.
  • Two supporting documents are required and must be submitted at the time of application: 1) a resume, and 2) a letter of reference from your current or most recent manager highlighting your suitability to participate in NNPHL.
