Deadline: 16-Oct-20The Community Foundation of Broward is encouraging for its Broward Pride program to increase LGBT+ residents’ access to and inclusion in health care and wellness services that address their physical and mental health needs. The Community Foundation of Broward, founded in 1984, helps individuals, families and businesses create personalized charitable Funds that support game-changing philanthropy

Now the coronavirus pandemic has shown that addressing the health care needs of LGBT+ populations is critical. Because many LGBT+ individuals have underlying health conditions and face challenges with health care services, they are more vulnerable to contracting the virus.

Seed Grants
According to HealthyPeople.gov, eliminating LGBT+ health disparities and enhancing efforts to improve the health of LGBT+ residents are necessary to ensure that they can live long and healthy lives. Therefore, LGBT+ individuals’ health requires specific attention from health care professionals to address a number of disparities. For example:

LGBT+ youth are two or three times more likely to attempt suicide.
Lesbians are less likely to get preventive services for cancer.
Gay men are at higher risk of HIV and other STDs, especially among communities of color.
Lesbians and bisexual females are more likely to be overweight or obese.
Transgender individuals have a high prevalence of HIV/STDs, mental health issues and suicide.
Transgender individuals are less likely to have health insurance than heterosexual or lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals.
