Disaster Management Coordinator for West and Central Africa and Overseas Branches Region

Location: Moorgate, London

Contract type: Permanent

Hours: Full time – 35 hours per week 

Salary: £36,000 per annum (inc. London Weighting)

 

As part of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent humanitarian network, the British Red Cross helps millions of people in the UK and around the world to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies, disasters and conflicts.

We are seeking a Disaster Management Coordinator to co-develop and support BRC initiatives to strengthen organisational disaster management capabilities with partner National Societies and engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop good practice.

 

What you will be doing

Responding to disasters and crises is a mandated capacity of all Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies. At a time where 128 Red Cross National Societies across the world are responding to COVID-19, never has there been a more critical time to join the British Red Cross.

As a Disaster Management Coordinator, you will ensure high quality in emergency preparedness and remotely lead BRC’s emergency responses provide advisory support to the team, and other regional Movement actors, to facilitate remote and coordinated disaster management support in the West and Central Africa region and UK Overseas Branches; this means you would be covering two very different regions as well as different types of emergencies and natural disasters.

In addition, you will co-develop and support BRC’s initiatives to strengthen organisational DM capabilities with national Red Cross Societies in the region or the International Federation of the Red Cross and engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop good practice.

You will work collaboratively within a matrix structure, including the Head of Region, Country managers, other colleagues and partners in the Region, in addition to technical specialists within BRC’s Emergencies, Surge and Technical Advisory team

 

The role will be based at the UK Head Office in London and may require regular travel to the region.

 

What we are looking for

With proven skills in project management, you will have substantial experience of working in the development, delivery and remote coordination of Disaster Response programmes, including significant exposure to overseas work

Having the ability to provide advice and guidance remotely and navigate a multicultural environment with fluency in French is essential to be successful in this role.

As a person, you will need to be a team player; someone who is good at communicating, leading and engaging people. You must show commitment to the cause and be resilient to stress when a disaster hits and the workload peaks.

Meet the team

The International Directorate is, among other things, responsible for international disaster response, support to resilience programmes and organisational development of our partner Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The Programmes and Partnerships department provides single oversight of our community resilience and capacity building partnerships with national societies and disaster management activities. You will be sitting in the West and Central Africa and Overseas Branches Regional team within the Programmes and Partnerships department.
