Apply for the NPR Kroc Fellowship 2018 in Washington, DC (Stipend up to $40,000)

Deadline: December 31, 2017

The NPR Kroc Fellowship is a year-long, intensive training program designed to bring exceptional people into the public radio system. The Fellowship identifies and develops a new generation of extraordinary public radio journalists. Over the course of a year, the three Kroc Fellows get rigorous, hands-on training in every aspect of public radio journalism, both on-air and online, including writing, reporting, producing and editing. Throughout the experience Kroc Fellows can expect to develop:

  • Production and editorial skills, by working on an NPR program. Past fellows have worked at All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition Saturday;
  • Reporting and on-air experience, by working under the guidance of NPR editors;
  • Web writing and multi-media production skills, by working with NPR digital producers and editors;
  • First-hand broadcast journalism experience, by working at an NPR Member Station.

Each Fellow will rotate through various units at NPR, in both the News and Digital Media Divisions, receiving training at each stage from an experienced producer, editor, or reporter. Among other things, Fellows will learn how to pitch news stories, find sources, book interviews, report stories, and work in the studio. They will receive regular instruction in writing for radio and on-air performance, and they will work alongside some of the nation’s most respected reporters, producers and editors. The Fellows will spend most of their time at NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C., but each Fellow will also have an assignment at an NPR Member Station.

Benefits

  • Each Kroc Fellow will receive an annual stipend of more than $40,000, plus benefits, including medical insurance and up to three weeks paid vacation.
  • NPR will also provide Kroc Fellows with professional guidance and assist in job placement.

Eligibility

  • Open to students who have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree on or after January 1, 2016 or who expect to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree by the Spring of 2017 before the fellowship begins in August, 2017;

  • While the ideal Kroc Fellow aspires to work in public radio, previous journalism or radio experience is not required;
