About the role

Amnesty International’s West & Central Africa Regional Office is looking for an experienced regional human rights education coordinator to lead our strategies and initiatives that foster people’s knowledge, capacities, and actions to defend human rights in the region.

Job purpose

To lead Amnesty International’s human rights education work in Africa by working with Amnesty structures, as well as other internal and external partners in the region pioneering, designing, and implementing human rights education as a tool for change in human rights practices.

About you

You are a person that thrives for getting people excited to learn, exchange, and apply knowledges for social change. You’re able to come up with effective strategies for people to gain new knowledge, skills, and attitudes. You have facilitated trainings and developed educational materials such as lesson plans and training toolkits. You have worked with communities and people from diverse backgrounds in Africa, applying inclusive approaches and sensitivity to incorporate their needs, preferences, and life experiences, and you want to help change the world for the better.

Main responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic development and coordinate the implementation of regional human rights education initiatives in Africa
  • Ensure human rights education is part of an integrated and coordinated approach to human rights change in Africa, including through liaising and collaborating with campaign and activism initiatives
  • Coordinate activities, facilitate trainings and develop high quality human rights education resources to ensure improved human rights education capacity of Amnesty’s entities in the region, human rights activists, and partners
  • Coordinate the overall operations, outputs, and outcomes of regional human rights education work, including supporting and supervising staff and volunteers in the team
  • Communicate and promote the impact of human rights education in Africa

Skills and experience

  • Knowledge of, education in, and solid experience with pedagogy, as well as participatory approaches to education for social change in Africa
  • Sound understanding of action-oriented human rights education methodologies
  • Strong experience in project management, including drafting proposals for donors, reports, and coordination of staff to deliver outcomes and impact
  • Ability to understand and express ideas in French and English concisely, both orally and in writing. Working knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese considered a plus
