Amnesty International seeks a Researcher in our Southern Africa Regional Office
About You
As Amnesty International’s lead expert on economic social justice, you will be expected to have a good grasp of current developmental issues driving inequality, poverty and unemployment as key drivers of human rights violations. You will lead on the development and implementation of overarching research and campaigning strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities, providing research expertise, research management, political judgment and analytical, communication and representational skills. This role will lead on the provision of expert advice, investigate, analyse and produce outputs on Economic Social and Cultural Rights in southern Africa using the root cause methodology. It will ensure that AI identifies and addresses new trends or emerging ESCR issues in a timely manner. The role, will enrich the southern Africa Regional office’s ability to use national budget information to formulate advocacy and campaigning strategies that address root causes of human rights violations.
Main Responsibilities
Using root cause analysis, the Researcher will contribute to AI’s research and campaigning by analysing deprivations of economic
and social rights using interdisciplinary research and statistical methods with a view to providing timely, accurate, independent and
impartial assessments
Use interdisciplinary research and statistical methods with a view to providing timely, accurate, independent and impartial assessments on human rights situations including developing tools to monitor accountability on the SDGS as they relate to countries in Southern Africa.
To contribute to the development of sub-regional strategies for researching and campaigning and provide input into internal planning processes on economic social and cultural rights
To develop and maintain a strong database of useful information and contacts on key economic and social rights themes including but not limited to business and human rights especially extractives, budget monitoring and accountability groups, women’s rights and interface between civil and political rights themes and ESCR.
To represent AI to external audiences, including governmental, intergovernmental and various public forums including building
relationships with Regional Economic Communities such as SADC.
To Contribute to AI’s effective response to emerging trends in economic social and cultural rights conceptualising research themes
and providing useful technical advice to other teams in the Regional Office and beyond as needed
Organize and undertake field research missions, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of relevant human rights concerns
Contribute substantively to the development of AI’s cutting-edge program covering the whole spectrum of economic social and
cultural rights, women’s rights and business and human rights and will carry out research that analyses trends in adapting economic
social and cultural rights norms and policies with the aim of dismantling extreme inequality.
Contribute to the formulation of advocacy and campaign strategies on agreed priority work areas
Monitor and analyse regional political and economic trends with a view to developing effective responses to address human rights
violations including providing expert advice to other teams in the Regional office
To keep abreast of all project areas related to and ensure integration of economic social and cultural rights in the programming of all the regional offices thematic projects.
To represent AI to external audiences, including governmental, intergovernmental and various public forums including building
relationships with Regional Economic Communities such as SADC.
Organize and undertake field research missions, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of relevant human rights concerns
Write or contribute to the drafting of timely and effective reports, briefings, position papers, correspondence, action materials, press
releases, and other internal and external documents
Perform all necessary administrative tasks to ensure effective selfservicing, participate in the recruitment and induction of new staff
and consultants and perform other corporate tasks as appropriate.
