Each year, the Swedish Institute (SI) awards scholarships to promote and develop good, lasting relationships, exchanges and networks with people and institutions in other countries. 2017 is not an exception. Applications are opening up once again for several SI scholarship programmes to enable you study in Sweden.

During the scholarship holders’ time in Sweden, they take part in SI Network for Future Global Leaders to improve exchanges and contacts with and among participants through events, workshops, seminars and visits to companies around Sweden. After the studies are completed, all scholarship holders also become members of the SI Alumni Network, a global network that helps deepen the relationship with Sweden even after the programme.

SI Scholarships

The following scholarships are aimed at international students, researchers and professionals.

1. The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) is open to highly qualified students who are citizens of countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients and who will study full-time for a master’s degree in Sweden. The scholarships cover both living costs and tuition fees. The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live.

2. The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South Africa

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) for South Africa is open to students who are citizens of South Africa and who will study full-time for a master’s degree in Sweden. The scholarships cover both living costs and tuition fees. The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of South Africa.

3. The Swedish-Turkish Programme

The Swedish–Turkish Scholarship Programme offers scholarships for citizens of Turkey for master’s level studies as well as for PhD studies and postdoctoral research in Sweden within the fields of Social Sciences, Law, International and European Relations, European Affairs, European Law, or Human Rights Law. The programme aims to forge closer links between Turkey and the EU, and to contribute to strengthened democracy and a greater respect for human rights.

4. The SI Scholarships for the Western Balkans

Scholarships for the Western Balkans are open to highly qualified applicants from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia (FYROM), Montenegro and Serbia. Scholarships for master’s level studies are offered within the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS). Scholarships for part of PhD studies and postdoctoral research are offered within the SI Scholarships for the Western Balkans and are available for the field of social sciences only.

5. The Visby Programme

The Visby Programme offers scholarships for academic and expert mobility within the Baltic Sea region, as well as scholarships for inbound and outbound mobility. The programme targets master’s students as well as PhD students, post-docs and senior scientists from Sweden, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine.  Read more about the Visby Programme.

6. The Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund

The Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund is open to applicants from the U.S. It awards grants for visits in Sweden for two to four weeks. It is specifically intended for professional enrichment. Read more about the Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund.

7. The North2north student exchange programme

The North2north student exchange programme offers scholarships and tuition fee waivers for Russian and Swedish students within the University of the Arctic co-operation. Scholarships for Russian students are available for studies at Luleå University of Technology, Mid Sweden University, Umeå University and Stockholm University. Read more about the North2north student exchange programme.
