Call For Future Leaders: Schwarzman Scholars Program 2017/ 2018- Study in China on Full Scholarship

Schwarzman Scholars application is now open. Schwarzman Scholars is a highly selective, one year Master’s degree program based at Tsinghua University in Beijing, one of China’s top academic institutions. Inspired by the Rhodes scholarship, it is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders for the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century.

The Schwarzman Scholars experience is anchored in a rigorous and innovative master’s degree program at Tsinghua University, one of the country’s leading universities. Drawing on the best traditions of Tsinghua and top academic institutions around the world, the curriculum bridges the academic and professional worlds to educate students about leadership and about China’s expanding role in the world.

The program also provides Scholars with unparalleled learning opportunities with leaders from China and the world through high-level interactions at lectures, an internship program, a mentors network, and intensive deep-dive travel seminars.

Eligibility

  • The program is open to students and young professionals between the ages of 18 and 28 years old, regardless of nationality
  • Applicants should have obtained an undergraduate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong English Language skills, as all teaching will be conducted in English. If the applicant’s native language is not English, official English proficiency test scores must be submitted with the application. Acceptable test options are:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT)
    • Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT)
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

    Note: This requirement is waived for applicants who graduated from an undergraduate institution where the language of instruction was English at an institution located in a country where English was a national language.

Scholarship Funding

The extraordinary students selected to become Schwarzman Scholars will receive a comprehensive scholarship. It will include:

  • Tuition Fees
  • Room and board
  • Travel to and from Beijing at the beginning and end of the academic year
  • An in-country study tour
  • Required course books and supplies
  • Lenovo laptop and smartphone
  • Health insurance
  • A modest personal stipend of $3,500

With a $400 million endowment, Schwarzman Scholars will be the single largest philanthropic effort ever undertaken in China by largely international donors.

How to Apply

Interested candidates will participate in a rigorous and thorough selection process, designed to identify the most promising young leaders from around the world. The process includes an online application and credentials evaluation as well as in-person regional interviews. Those selected will have demonstrated their potential to not only benefit from but also contribute to the Schwarzman Scholars program

  • Four electronic letters of recommendation
  • An essay in three sections : Personal Statement, Leadership Essay, Current Affairs Essay

Key Dates

China Application System

  • Applicants who hold passports from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao must apply via the China application system
  • Online application opens on March 23, 2016 and closes on June 15, 2016
  • Interviews: July 6-9, 2016 in Beijing
  • Admissions Decisions will be made before 1 October 2016

United States/Global Application Systems

  • Applicants from all other countries and regions must apply using the global application system (see below for exceptions)
  • Online application opens on April 15, 2016 and closes on September 15, 2016
  • Interviews: Bangkok (October 28th), London (November 2nd), and New York (November 7th)
  • Admissions Decisions will be made by mid-November 2016
