Org. Setting and Reporting
The Research & Awareness section internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The intern will be operating as part of the UNODC Regional Office for West and Central Africa (ROSEN), under the general guidance of the Research & Awareness staff for West and Central Africa. She/he will assist the latter in the monitoring and trends in the area of drugs, crime and terrorism in West and Central Africa, as well as for the preparation of analytical studies and threat assessments on the matter.
Part of the research is the analysis of linkages between drug/crime issues and economic development, security and governance, using relevant data.
This post is located in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for West and Central Africa in Dakar, Senegal (ROSEN).

The Intern will carry out the following activities:

-Collecting and reviewing information from governments, inter-governmental/non-governmental organizations, media, UNODC or other UN Offices, and other relevant sources;
-Providing qualitative research; selecting relevant sources, information and data;
-Preparing databases and creating charts and graphs related thereto;
-Assisting the Research Officer in analysing information and data and identifying relevant issues and trends;
-Assisting UNODC ROSEN in developing/maintaining databases compiling and analysing data, and creating charts and graphs related thereto;
-Identifying, selecting and ensuring correct usage of UNODC data and information resources as they relate to individual studies/assessments;
-Assisting in collecting, organising and storing sources and information with a view to Bases/information management system; and
-Providing administrative and general organisational assistance.

-Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary.
-Uses time efficiently.

Education

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in communication, economics, political science or related field or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in communication, economics, political science or related field ; or have graduated with a university degree in communication, economics, political science or related field and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

Applicants must be computer-literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

No professional work experience required.

Languages

English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship advertised, fluency in oral and written French and English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
