Internship at UNESCO Dakar – Education Sector
Sector-Wide Policy and Planning Cluster

 

UNESCO Dakar

UNESCO Regional Multisectoral Office for West Africa-Sahel in Dakar (UNESCO Dakar) represents UNESCO in seven West African countries (Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau,
Mali, Niger and Senegal) covering all the sectors of the Organization: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication & information. The new mandate of theRegional Office is both multi- sectoral and interdisciplinary.

The UNESCO Dakar Education Sector is charged with delivery of UNESCO education programmes in the seven abovementioned countries.

In addition, it is responsible for UNESCO’s regional coordination in three expected results of the UNESCO’s Major Programme I – Education for 2016-2017 (sector-wide policy and planning, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and the globalcoordination, partnerships and research for Education 2030 agenda) in sub-Sahara Africa, as well asfor the HIV and health education programme in Western and Central Africa.

The Education Team and the Sector-Wide Policy and Planning Cluster

The mission of the UNESCO Dakar Education Team is to contribute to the improvement of access, learning and performance for all in education systems though knowledge sharing, technical assistance,
policy advice, capacity development, programme monitoring and advocacy as concerns education. The Education Team is organized around five thematic clusters, while promoting a multi‐sectoral andmultidisciplinary approach.

One Programme Specialist is responsible for each of the following thematic clusters:
(1) Sector-wide policy and planning,
(2) Teaching and learning,
(3) “Learning to live together” skills and competencies,
(4) Skills for life and the world of work, and
(5) HIV and Health education.

These five thematic clusters are monitored by UNESCO Dakar Education Programme coordination that also coordinates SDG4-Education 2030 (through the Regional Coordination Group on SDG4-ED2030 for West and Central Africa – RCG4), partnerships and networking at a regional level.

The intern will work specifically within the Sector-wide policy and planning (SWPP) cluster and in support to the RCG4-WCA Task Team on Education Systems’ Strengthening. The SWPP cluster’s mission is

(i) to facilitate the integration of the Education 2030 agenda (Sustainable Development Goal 4) in national education policies, which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all, and

(ii) provide guidance, capacity development, and technical
support to countries for education planning and management.

Main intern tasks

The internwill primarily contribute to the SWPP cluster under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist with the possibility to also support activities of other thematic clusters where relevant and needed. The intern can consult other programme specialists for advice in their expertise area. Critical
thinking, creativity, innovation, collaboration and team work will be encouraged.

Specifically, the intern will be expected to:

● Provide inputs to SDG4-Education 2030 materials being developed for countries and partners

● Assist in the preparation of materials for national planning workshops & dialogue in the context of SDG4-Education 2030

● Support the organization and analysis of a follow up survey on SDG4 country readiness

● Develop contents (web articles and other communication products) about SWPP cluster and Systems Strengthening Task Team activities for UNESCO Dakar website and RCG4 platform

● Provide any other support requested by the supervisor including research, analysis, and translation of Sector’s documents.

Eligibility and qualifications

● Current enrolment in a degree programme at the graduate school level (masters level or above) in education or other relevant fields (social sciences, international relations, development studies, etc.)

● General interest and understanding of education and development issues, particularly in Africa

● Excellent analytical, written, and interpersonal skills

● Ability to work on a team and in a multicultural environment

● Full professional proficiency in French and/or English and good knowledge of the other language.

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Knowledge of other software programmes, such as InDesign or Content Management Systems, is an asset

Internship conditions

● The internship is unpaid. All expenses are the responsibility of the intern (airfare, visa, housing, food and all other expenses). Scholarships and financial aid are often available via
universities or other institutions.

● Duration of internship: 2 to 6 months (preference is given to internships lasting longer than 4 months).

● Starting date: as soon as possible

● Office hours: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm from Monday to Thursday and 8:30 am to 2:00 pm on
Friday, flexible in function of workload.
